Bill Gates head on a stick!
« on: October 03, 2013, 10:27:18 PM »
After over a decade of the stock not growing and being a smelly turd shareholders feeling good about the ousting of CEO Steve Ballmer now also want Chairman of the Board Bill Gates out as well. Gates only owns 4.5% of MS now, he owned 49% when it went public. He sells 80 million shares per year and if that continues will have no stake in the company in 2018. No matter if he stays or goes it's probably too late for the company. They will continue their slow death spiral to irrelevance. No one cares about Windows anymore and the bad very costly decision of making Windows 8, Windows Phone & Surface is trying to claim it's next victim (Bill Gates).

Man, you sure are obsessed with Microsoft.  Let me check my calendar - is it 1992 again?  No?

Are things this slow in the Amiga arena anymore that we have to fall back on the same trodden-over ground?  What's next, a post from you titled "Micro$loth" or "Intel OUTSIDE AMIRITE?!"

%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!s sake man, there's so much cool stuff going on with the Amiga - why not post that in News instead of working out some bull%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@!%&$#?@! argument that was to be honest decided two decades ago?

People can point at MS and say they're moribund (they still occupy something like 95% of the PC world, sorry), that Gates sucks (protip: Bill Gates is likely a better human being in terms of his philanthropic efforts than any ten people in his position I can think of), that Windows is this, that or the other but the reality is instead of focusing on the positive within the Amiga community this silly schoolyard bickering at the rich kid just makes you look like a prat.
Back away from the EU-SSR!

I hate Microsoft as much as many of you, but you're wrong.
Bad business practices killed those companies.

Its a free market, and the market didn't choose commodore or Gateway over other PC manufacturers.

I don't blame Bill for killing the small company I worked for, even though our four to five user multitasking 68K boxes could run circles around the XT and AT systems of that period.

Get it straight, lack of (good) software is what kills alternative platforms.

Well, by that logic:

Apple/Google killed Microsoft.

Microsoft killed Amiga.

Therefore, Apple/Google killed Amiga.

@Iggy @EvilGuy

I don't think you guys have as much insider information on that topic as I do. I used to work for Commodore. Maybe I can show you one day. In the meantime enjoy these minor links.

Actually, I think I might.
I'm 52.
My company made 68K based PC when the Amiga was still current.

I used to have IBM engineers stop by and make favorably comparison (of our systems) to IBM 360 (since our base system supported four users out of the box0.

Then, one day, one of these guys handed my an in house copy of windows 3.0 (anyone that had access to that product will remember that the colors were locked into a rather hideous color combination).

However, when I put customers on machines with this installed they could use it relatively intuitively.

Game over.

And, we also never recovered from the rapid development of PC specific software titles.
Yeah, maybe some were not that good, but there were a lot of them.

So please don't lecture me about what went wrong.

My first computer was from SWTPC.

Face it, our hardware was better, we lost to better marketing and savy business acumen.
Its that simple.

And besides, we all know Commodore had no idea how to market the Amiga.

Um, no.

Microsoft didn't kill Commodore or the Amiga.  The Amiga was never a threat to Microsoft.  By 1985, DOS was selling exceedingly well as was the PC.  The Amiga was never going to change that kind of momentum.  Just like the Mac never put a dent in the PC momentum.

However, if Commodore has marketed the Amiga correctly, it could have found a much better niche and with proper hardware (chipset) upgrades they could have kept it there.

Commodore ultimately killed Commodore and the Amiga.

By the 90's, the PC killed anything that wasn't a PC.

I believe you can see PC and MSDOS sales on Wikipedia.  When you look at 1983 through 1986 it is not hard to see how Microsoft made so much money.

Bill Gates isn't stupid (Ballmer was stupid), he's carefully winding down is involvement with the company that simply isn't relevant in the modern world. :)

I don't like Microsoft but at the same time most of my games work on there.

I see where Sysadmin is coming from.  I remember the anti-trust suites. If I am thinking right that Bill Gates wanted a penny for each computer sold with his his Microsoft basic at that time.

At the same time business decisions do have impact on them. I wish Commodore would have survived. Nothing seems to come up from Commodore international.

BTW - What happened to the GD edit button?
I can't even correct my typing errors?

Edit - OK, got that back, but weird as I was logged in.

I don't want to be confrontational, but I'm still very bitter about seeing superior solutions get outmaneuvered by crappy hardware and software.

Commodores management certainly played a role in their own demise. Irving Goulds policy of stamping out any and all Amiga clones was not a smart one. He should have encouraged and benefited from a healthy Amiga clone market. Irving Gould was the extreme lazy IT industry fat cat before there were many computer industry fat cats. It's a Bahamas thing.

The business I was in (late 80's early 90's) supported/developed for PC, Unix and Mac. I got to work with and support many types of systems. Still Amiga out shown them all in many ways. However I feared the end around 1991 when I saw CBM spending lots of cash on PC-Colt models/deveopment that couldn't even run basic MSDOS with out crashing. At the same time they seemed to skimping on Amiga development letting 3rd party vendors pick up the slack on new products. Their brand was being hurt by poor clones and their star was being treated like a step child. We know how that turned out.

Over 2 years time I got my fill of Colts. One day I set up a line of system in our back office of 6 different PC systems. Two different Colts and 4 other clones. IBM, Amstrad (I think), AST, and a Kaypro. We had a customer that was using Colts and was claiming they might have a virus. I cleared all systems, removed hard drives (if they had them) and then booted each of the 6 with new clean copies of DOS. (both 3.1 and 3.3). I ran a series of boots and basic DOS functions tests to prove to management that the Colts were crashing while the others worked fine. I Did all kinds of variation.... swapped the floppies and disk drives around, swapped/replaced memory, ran system stress tests. Colts failed, other clones worked. In the end that company dumped their small fleet of Colts (12-15) and went with another vendor. How many times was this type story repeated across the county?

What if CBM had made a better clone? What if they had forgotten about the clone altogether and properly developed Amiga? When Colt sales tanked at the time it seemed that CBM execs couldn't empty the piggy banks and head for the exits fast enough.

Well that's the way it seemed to me at the time anyway. And honestly I'm not sorry for helping killing those sorry PC-Colts.

BTW, just so it doesn't seem I'm beating up on just Colt's.... fast forward a couple years and I had to do an almost identical set of test to show that AT&T clones couldn't run anything above DOS 3.1 (or was it 3.0?) without taking a dump. And when's the last time you saw and AT&T clone? Guess that's my fault too. :)
