Help guide replacing roms in A1200
« on: September 27, 2013, 03:33:53 AM »
I bought a set of 3.1 roms to replace the original 3.0 roms in my A1200, but I must confess I have never even opened my computer not even once.

So I'm wondering if there's any pictorial guide or video that I could use to guide me through.

I'll later then update WB 3.0 with 3.1 with the original floppies.

Thanks in advance for any help.

1. Remove old ROMs
2. Insert new ROMs

That's basically it. If you've never replaced a chip before, a good way to get them out of the socket is to insert a flathead screwdriver between the chip and the socket (not the socket and the motherboard!) and gently turn it left and right. That will slowly lever the chip out. You'll probably have to do this near each corner of each chip.

Other thing to keep in mind is that it *does* matter which chip goes in which socket. The instructions you got with your new ROMs should tell you. If not, some motherboard photos around the web probably will.

Finally, I believe there are more pins in the socket than there are pins on the chip. Make a note of how the old ROMs are positioned in the socket before removing them and insert the new ROMs the same way. Again, online motherboard photos can help with this, too.

Great tips. Thanks.

I forgot to mention that I didn't receive any instructions with the roms. That's why I need some pictures to guide me.

I think if you just do a google image search for "Amiga 1200 motherboard" and the like, that should give you all the pics you need.  ;)

+1 to matching the pins, also it's not a bad idea to make sure your sockets are perfectly clean before pressing the new chips home.  ;)

Ah. That makes things a little more challenging. This thread should have what you need.

A good tips is to take photos of the motherboard before you start removing any components. Make sure you can see what the components are, their alignment and where they are located.

It sounds easy enough to remember where and how a few component goes but sometimes you do forget. Then it's better to look at your own photo than trying to find it on the Internet. This is a tips I wish I followed more often...
