Amiga 1200 flashing lights
« on: September 22, 2013, 09:37:46 PM »
Today I turned on my amiga. I noticed a red screen and the power light flashing. Then after about 5 seconds the screen goes green then red again. It then continues to repeat this process. I disconnected the RAM expansion in the trap door and the PCIMA card but that had no effect.

My amiga is only about 3 years old as bought it from amigakit.com

Any idea how to resolve this problem?

Thanks

Open your Amiga 1200 and look for the kickstart roms and try to press on them. Turn the Amiga back on, maybe it helps.

Red means a Kickstart ROM error.

Opened up the amiga. Pressed down on the ROMS. Turned it on and the red light appears. Seems like the green one has gone

Okay, I've swapped the ROMS around with another amiga 1200 I have for spare parts. I seated both ROMS in turned on the amiga and the green light came on but nothing else.
HDD doesn't even boot. Screen is just blank. So I then thought about replacing the ROMS and sticking the original ones back in. Once I done that still nothing just the power light on.

Can someone tell me if there is a correct way of installing the ROMS. Do they sit over to the left or over to the right?

Thanks

I killed a set of roms by inserting them the wrong way, they got very hot and didn't work again. Isn't pin 1 listed on the motherboard?

For your reference:

•   Red - An error in the Kickstart rom as detected.
•   Green - An error in the Chip Ram was detected.
•   Blue - An error in the custom chip set was detected.
•   Yellow - The CPU encountered an error before the system's error-trapping code (the code the calls up the Guru) was in place.
•   Black - No CPU detected.
•   Grey - CPU Passed the test.
•   White - CPU failure.

Yes i did notice at one point when I inserted the ROMS and turned the machine on they did get hot. Guess that means they are fried?

Would you recommend upgrading to 3.1?

Just throwing this out there, but I don't think your problem is in any way related to OP's.  You might want to look at something in the OS 3.5 ROM update, if it does the same sort of soft updates as 3.9.  Try booting off a plain old 3.1 Workbench disk, then hit Ctrl-Amiga-Amiga and see if you have the same problem.

3.1 can be bought from AmigaKit or many ebay sellers for under $20.  IMHO no reason for anyone to not run it unless they're trying to build a truely "retro" system.  ;)

The red screen can be the ROMs, OR any card that is acting up. Best routine is to remove ALL cards, and see if it will re-boot. This should include anything connected to the clockport too.
If the ROMs were inserted incorrectly, they may well be fried - it doesn't take much. The 3.1 OS is a worthwhile upgrade, so go for it. Only a very few hard headed gamers will try to argue that case.
I wish the OP luck getting the machine up and running again....

Okay. I purchased some new ROMS. Installed them by following the instructions. Powered the amiga up. It then successfully gets to workbench. Then suddenly the yellow screen appears. Turn the main power off and turn it back on again the power light appears with the yellow screen and flickers for a few seconds before the screen goes blank.

Is anyone able to shine any light on this matter?

Thanks.

By the way I have unplugged the PCIMA card, 4mb expansion card, HDD, floppy drive and still the yellow light comes on

Have you checked your capacitors?

Check your voltages as well if possible. However, assuming you have tried another PSU, it is unlikely them both to be faulty.

Okay I've replaced the power supply. Has made no difference. Though I'd connect the Floppy disk drive, but I get no ticking noise when I turn the machine back on. If it is the capacitors which ones do I need to check?

Thanks
