X500 Plus - Instructions -
« on: September 21, 2013, 10:26:20 AM »
As the first group of people are starting to receive their X500 Plus cases I thought of recording a video which explains how things work.

X500 Plus Instructions

Consider it as a sort of manual in video format hence its length.
I recommend watching it until the end. It helps knowing how your X500 Plus works and the ideas behind it.

Thank you. :)

If I have time I'll make a downloadable pdf of the manual, for now it's faster in video format :)

Thanks.

Quick update:

Assembling carries on as normal (whatever that means...), I'm getting speedier at this, moved from assembling one a day (when I can, free from work and life obstacles) to two, two and a half... :D

The next delivery is for the following people (it means the cases are assembled, all have a one photocopied A4 quick guide, a flexible PCI-Express 16x riser card, Amiga/language adhesives and an "X500 Plus Kickstarter 2013" key ring as a memento and are boxed ready to go):

Piercarlo - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Amber and Green
Enrico -  black X500 Plus - LEDs =  Amber and Green
Edward - black X500 Plus - LEDs =  Blue and Blue
Peter - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Red and Blue
Darrin - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Red and Blue
Paul - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Red and Blue
Lars - black Plus - LEDs = Red and Green

Next week I should finally get the white aluminium panels and get assembling those too...

And this is it for now...thanks :)

PS: Paul, please get in contact, emailing you bounces back.

*QUICK UPDATE*

I've had a NIGHTMARE with the delivery companies...collection for the X500 Plus boxes failed and I had to spend a few hours on the phone (charges apply) asking where the driver was! After been bounced from one call centre to another they finally managed to organise  a new collection (so I basically wasted a couple of annual leave days because the driver never turned up, I'm fuming.) :(

Today the following have gone out to Australia, USA, Europe:

Piercarlo - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Amber and Green - SENT
Enrico - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Amber and Green -  SENT
Edward - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Blue and Blue - SENT
Peter - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Red and Blue - SENT
Darrin - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Red and Blue - SENT
Michael - white X500 Plus - LEDs = Green and Red - SENT
Gero - white X500 Plus - LEDs = Red and Blue - SENT
Laurent - white X500 Plus - SENT
Jan-Erik - white X500 Plus - LEDs = Green and Blue - SENT
Robert - white X500 Plus - LEDs = Red and Green - SENT

Delivery time: 3-5 days (at least that is what they say...ARGH!)

In the meantime:

Paul - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Red and Blue - RECEIVED
Laurent - black X500 Plus - RECEIVED
Karl - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Green and Red - RECEIVED
Stephen - white X500 Plus - LEDs = White and Blue - RECEIVED
Richard - black X500 Plus - LEDs = Green and Amber - SENT but not heard from you!

Please let me know IF/WHEN and in what state they arrive as one of you has reported that the box was damaged but the case was fine apart from the LEDs which had come off! I really hope they don't throw the bloody boxes around when they collect them... :(
Slightly nervous and stressed about this...I've only spent a few years on this project and 4-5 hours assembling each one of them!

Anyway...please email me a photo of your finished/improved/hacked case as I'd like to put them on my webpage.

There should be some X500 Plus left in black (about 6-7...need to check the parts...my room is a mess!) and 3-4 in white (only 9-10 were made of these) so if anyone wants one please let me know... :D

Thanks for your patience.

Many will find a flexible PCI-Express 16x riser card inside the box.

- WARNING -

Use ONLY with PCI Express 16x graphics cards!
If you want to use a PCI graphics card you must get a flexible PCI riser card!

I thought I'll mention it although I'm sure most of you will know what to do.

Wow!
Welcome to the world of small scale manufacturing.
I haven't been involved in that since the early '90s and NOW I remember why.

In any case, you must hand it to this man.
He stated his goal, pursued it, and realized it.
And to top it all, its a damned nice case.

Hey, I'm a refuge from another computer community.
But I've been here long enough to expect that once you had announced your intentions, I'd spend the next several years hearing about how the hardware was due in "about two weeks".

But you did it!
And they looked really nice.

Warn you?
Nah! Those experiences were just long enough ago that I look back on them with real pride and a sense of accomplishment (even though it was the closest to bankrupt that I have ever been).

Welcome to that odd little community of people who just wanted to produce something that they would want for themselves.
It doesn't have to make economic sense.
And its never pain free.

But, when it works, its really f'ing cool.
To repeat myself, damned nice work man.

:)
Mine was always going to be an amateurish/hobby project. Once the parts are cut I assemble the cases by hand and it takes ages. I drill some of the holes myself since the factory couldn't guarantee the accuracy. It's knackering and stressful because you're always thinking: "I want to make it as nice as possible..." or "Have I forgotten a screw?!" the minute you've just finished packing it! :D

There was also the problem of trying to make everything replaceable (the switch, the LEDs) so you think how much glue shall I use, will low to medium strength be enough? And having the option to be able to disassemble the thing entirely to its basic components is something I'm proud of. This way you can drill holes, add to it, respray it etc...

I bet you had the same experience.
I'm glad someone knows what it means. I'm now just doing it for love really, forget making any money, it's loss, loss, loss all the way.:D

Just yesterday I had one of my mates asking "why do you do it if you're not making any money out of it" He couldn't understand.

I've now reached a point where all that counts is that someone is going to have fun with it.

Thank you for the kind words. Off to concentrate on the Evo versions with the mechanical keyboards and laser etched keys. I'd love to see what people come up with once they finished assembling them, I've asked everyone to send me a photo of their finished projects. I bet someone is going to put an Amiga sticker on it somewhere... :D

Looking at your post, I think you know why.
And if there was ever any money to be made from the Amiga community, that is pretty much gone.
