A600 floppy drive will not write to disk.
« on: September 08, 2013, 01:00:42 PM »
Hi guys.

I finally got  around to installing a new kickstart ROM on my Amiga 600 and downloading Workbench 3.1.  files to my CF Card.

But now I have a problem! SIGH!

When  I insert a new floppy (or old one for that matter) and try to format  it, the system claims that the floppy is write protected (which it is  NOT). Hence it cannot write the WB 3.1. ADF file to the floppy and I am  stuck.

This happens when using both EASY ADF transfer to floppy and if I use Workbenchs formatting tool.

Do you have any idea what can cause this problem?

Is it perhaps a faulty/broken floppy drive?

Hope to hear from someone soon.

All best
Anders

I cant say if its the same problem, but its not unusual for internal floppy drives to have a broken switch that detects if a disk is write protected or not (in which case it'll always see it as write protected). My a1200 is like this also.

Really though there's very little, if any need to use a floppy drive these days. In the vast majority of cases a workaround can be used.
Perhaps try using a rad disk (or multiple rad disks) and copying the contects of any adf images you want to use to them (unadf on aminet is quite handy for this).
Near as I can tell this is where I write something under the guise of being innocuous, but really its a pot shot at another persons/peoples choice of Amiga based systems. Unfortunately only I cant see how transparent and petty it makes me look.

I'd guess the drive needs to be cleaned. A cleaning disk can probably be found cheap online, or if you're feeling brave you can disassemble and clean by hand. You may have to disassemble regardless in order to get access to the write protect sensor. If it's anything like the disk-inserted sensor, some isopropyl alcohol will clear it right up.

I agree with both guys.
Check the switches as fishy said.Put 4-5 layers of tape above the disk lock cause most of the times it is becoming smaller from the years.
