Finally Ordered FastATA 1200 MK-IV IDE
« on: September 07, 2013, 12:41:08 AM »
Anything I should know before it arrives?

I have an overclocked Apollo 060.

It's fast.

On my Blizzard 1260 A1200 I get around 7 Megabytes a second with the FastATA IV compared to 2 megs a sec with stock IDE. This is with a IDE to SDHC adapter and 32gb card. SFS formatted.

These answers are correct:  it is a bitch to install (and keep plugged in even with the zip ties) and on a good HDD you may see up to 10 MBs. It also blocks use of other devices.

My MkIII has never come loose...it's almost as if it's glued in - and I didn't need to use the tie-wrap that came with it either. It needed a lot of force to get it seated correctly into the rom sockets though (the pins may be round not flat - hence a tighter fit than the flat pins on rom chips...but I can't be 100% sure about that as it was some years ago now).
If you don't push it all the way in it will try and pop out. Maybe they have flat pins now though so that would definitely make fitting easier. ;)

My MK IV fits tightly also. Haven't had any problems with it coming loose even after packing all my gear up and moving several months back. Unpacked the A1200 and she fired right up.

This thread has pics and measurements how to install a FastATA with an Indivision.  Not something I'd care to try myself, just passing it on.  ;)

Stacking flat pins sockets is too weak test has shown here. The device come with round pins and the first thing I did was change the motherboard to round pin sockets as I needed to removed the device many times during testing. This gave good contact even after multiple removals and still today gives good contact and does not come loose which I don't think is possible if motherboard is flat pinned.

It arrived, now I'm waiting on my risers so I can install it with my flicker fixer. How lame that they are not designed to fit in the case with other upgrades...

I thought that was the idea of the risers...because thats what help them fit with other upgrades? (And we are talking about the A1200 here, where a s*&tload of aftermarket upgrades can be fitted to make a super souped-up system...on a system that is essentially nowhere near as easy to upgrade as a big box Amiga).

We'll see if it works when they come in, will see soonish! :)
