OpenAmiga.net launched
« on: September 05, 2013, 03:11:18 PM »
After careful deliberation and many discussions between developers from all sections of the Amiga community the decision has been made to revive the OpenAmiga project.

The OpenAmiga Standard is intended to minimize the programming effort needed to port between the four current Amiga platforms, Amiga OS 3.x, AROS, MorphOS and AmigaOS 4.

It is a collection of API's that developers can target safe in the knowledge that their software written on one platform can be compiled and run as intended on an alternative platform that adheres to the standard....

Please feel free to visit our website and provide feedback as the standard is not set in stone yet.

We're currently focusing on the development of a new SDK, which we plan to release as soon as possible.

Great idea. Important for me: C++ (also in the files accessing MUI) and libcurl for easier http(s) access. The SDK should also contain (cross-)compiler for and on all platforms, so that you can compile on every platform for every platform. E.g. I do not have an AOS4 machine and my OS3 version does not work on OS4 (problems with libcurl). Normally I'm conding under MorphOS, but there is no working debugger, so I also have to code under OS3.

I am a bit ignorant in this subect but hasnt always been the AmigaOS 3.1 the API standart?
I mean if you cleanly follow the 3.1 API, an application should be portable on all others very quickly.
Wasnt the 3.1 API the mother of all this NG descendants anyway?

Why define a standart that is already there?

BTW you can define any standart, but then there is the will of the programmer to follow it. Many programmers (not all) wish that their app is only available to a specific NG system so that their NG choice has leverage above others.

If you are sticking with a 68K Amiga, there isn't much room for potential growth and 3.1 would do most people.   For those who are moving forward in whatever Amigaoid OS they prefer, there needs to be new standard for the sake of the community and adding on top of that as the path forward as time marches forward.

It's up to them if they want to participate, but if all Devs were like that, it would clearly hurt all platforms, greatly.   There are not enough Devs in any one camp to push things forward and mutual help is the only way to make things better for everyone.

How far is the sdk?
What means openamiga certified?
I ask because we are progressing with our app-store very nicely.
