« on: August 11, 2013, 09:37:25 AM »
Hi i use my Samsung s4 to gain access to my pc internet by tethering it which works very well with download speeds in access of 24 mb  which is pretty quick for me ,but as I was on line using a Ethernet internet cable with my Amiga whilst then having a normal internet provider ,I was wondering if any one has managed to get there  internet up and running using a smart phone to work as a way of getting internet on there Amiga ,I already own an amigakit wireless adapter that fits in to the pcmia slot on the Amiga and the drivers that come with it ,just wondered has any one tried it best wishes Brian

If your S4 supports WiFi Hotspot mode (mine does, but carriers vary) you should be able to connect to it via WiFi with your Amiga.

Hi my s4 does indeed support  wifi hotspot its just that I don't know what figures to input into the amiga to make it work  like ip address  and mask etc gateway and dns primary dns,lol

I was able to do it with my iPhone(registered pdanet) but I ended up using a netgear ethernet to wireless bridge connected to PCMCIA 100mb card.

My easynet card still works but when I was transporting it around from flashing it (to get the WPA) it got bent ever so slightly and the LEDs quit working. That is what I think happened anyway. Without the LEDS, while I could still probably get WPA working, it just was making it that much more difficult.

Now I have samsung galaxy s3 which I have not tried, but I also use pdanet on that and assume it would probably work just fine.

I also get better speed on my s3 than my home DSL which goes a max of 1.5mb. I have seen the phone reach over 10mb late at night on my upstairs level...

I wonder how hard it would be to write a driver to connect pdanet directly via USB to Amiga. Where I keep the amiga downstairs has no 4G anyway :)

i think you can just put in 8.8.8.8 for DNS for OpenDNS in Miami, but ideally the rest of that stuff should come over DHCP. From there you just need WPA2 which is the biggest challenge because you may need access to a notebook with pcmcia to flash your card. Also hopefully your samsung support 11B wireless...

For lack of an Amiga with wifi, I've tried both my Android devices (a Samsung SIII and an Acer A501 tablet) as wifi hotspots and connected via wifi to them.  Both have given me the following results:

IP Address: 192.168.43.XXX
Gateway: 192.168.43.1
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
DNS1: 192.168.43.1
DNS2: 0.0.0.0
Server IP: 192.168.43.1
Channel: 6

The only difference between connecting to the two was the final number in the assigned IP Address.
I hope this helps.

192.168.x.x addresses are used on lans, they are not real addresses.  Your DNS is not right, use 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4, these are Google's DNS servers.

I was using the android devices as a portable hotspot, so as far as anything connecting to the portable hotspot is concerned they are on a wlan, and thus get 192.168.x.x (and in the case of Android devices, apparantly it's 192.168.43.x).  And the DNS is fine, since the phone is acting as a modem router, there's no real point in bypassing it.  I am browsing the internet using the details I provided earlier, so I know they work.
I was giving Mr Moonlight some info that his Amiga would need to communicate with his S4 when his S4 is acting as a portable hotspot, which is what he was asking for earlier.
