commodore or amiga tech A1200?
« on: February 05, 2004, 04:56:53 AM »
Hi, im interested in buying a A1200 standard desktop. What im unsure about is which particular model to buy. Should i get a new amiga tech A1200 in the magic pack bundle for example?, or should i go after an original commodore version? I want to expand the amiga with HD's, accelerator, RAM, etc... later on. So what is the best option concerning issues with hardware support and compatibility?
Or are the differences between the commodore amiga and the amiga technologies amiga only trivial?
I would appreciate it if anyone could help me out.

Thanks :-?

I'm no expert on the A1200 but I will suggest that you look at www.amiga-hardware.com and see the differences in the hardware.  After looking at it, I would say if the floppy differences don't bother you, either one would do.

AFAIK the only issue is the Floppy Drive.  On the AT one they used PC 1.44 drives that were modified.  This caused some problems with Non Standard DOS games that hit the hardware.  A fix was later released so the one you get might not have the fix.  I would get the one for the best price they are both the same machine othewise.

If you intend to upgrade it ( as you will want to if you want to do anything other than play gamesl with it), I would recommend you get one that is already upgraded.  ideally you would want an 040 or better an 060 accelerator, 32 meg ram, graphics card preferably in a tower system.  it will cost you less to do it now rather than buying an unexpanded A1200 and expanding it yourself.  And new hardware is getting harder to find

My a1200 is a Escom (AT) a1200 Mother board rev 1d4, i have never had any problems with timing or any of the other rumours. (Apart from the Floppy problem, but my a1200 is now 1/2 way into a tower so i dont use FDD's no more). I agree tho, get the one with the best price, with kick 3.1 roms in it =oD
WinUAE Only... OS3.9 with 512mb ZIII ram ;)
