WTB: Hard Drive Controller for A1500 / A2000
« on: August 03, 2013, 10:23:50 PM »
I just managed to resurrect a battery damaged A1500. Now that it's working I'd like to upgrade it.

First on my list is a Hard Drive controller card. If anyone has one (and can/will post to the UK), please let me know.

Thank you :-)
2 x A500, 1 x A500 Plus, 1 x A300 (Early A600), 1 x A1200, 1 x A1500, 1 x A590, 1 x Commodore 1942, 1 x GVP HD8+ (8MB RAM, 52MB HDD), 1 x CD32, 1 x Stock CDTV, 1 x CDTV (10.5MB RAM, SCSI, Developer Flash card, Joystick adapter)

SCSI or IDE?  2091, GVP, Dataflyer vs Buddha?

I like GVP, BUT at the same time, it's easier for me to get IDE drives...

What about this one:
http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=360712382074

That one's a bit too expensive. I have a couple of cheaper options that I am watching on eBay and will bid on nearer the time if I don't get anything sooner...

How about the IDE68K project? Mine work pretty well and they are the first revision.

That looks interesting. Does anyone on here sell the boards?

It is a complete kit with all you need to run your system, not only a host-adapter. But anyway if you have better options you are a lucky man :)

I wouldn't say I have "better" options, just options that suit my budget a bit more

IMHO get the GVP.  For speed, compatibility, blah blah, it's tough to beat.  And SCSI drives are cheap on ebay all day long.  ;)

OK, quick question - what's better (if any) between the A2000 and A4000 HC8+ cards, or is it just the difference in chipset?

The dataflyer cards are good too. Some are IDE and SCSI on one. I used a IDE which is nice as you can use IDE DVDs or CDROMs, SCSI CDROMS are hard to find. Same for IDE HDs easy to find and you can use CF-IDE Adapters without problems.

I have a spare dataflyer card if you are interested send me a PM

You guys kill me.  I bought a slick black external CD-RW for my A500 for the princely sum of $2.99, and an internal CD-RW drive for my A2000 project for $5.99 a couple weeks ago off ebay.  In both cases shipping and the SCSI cable cost more than the actual drive, LOL.  ;)  Try searching for for Mac accessories, they don't command the insane prices that anything with "Amiga" in the listing name does.

Just a different chipset, as far as I can tell.  GVP had a terrible, terrible habit of releasing the exact same product (or nearly the same product) under at least a half-dozen different model names.  :p

My .02 cents, go with any of the GVP models and max out the ram (8MB of 30-pin simms can be found for under $15), get the latest 4.15 ROM from TJLazer (also around $15), and done.  If you feel like inflicting pain on yourself try to find a GuruROM, but with the pricey little adapter... good luck!  ;)

As an alternative the old "tried & true" A2091 isn't a bad card, and you can upgrade the ROM's and WD chip and do various performance hacks on it, as well, but it's limited to 2MB of memory expansion.

IMHO The GVP cards are a bit more friendly, across the board. And if you don't have an accelerator, you also can usually use more RAM with the GVP (many of their SCSI cards hold 8Mb).
The 2091 is an OK card too - but make sure you have the V7 ROMs and SCSI chip.
