AGA MKIIcr problems with glitches on screen only on WB ?
« on: July 24, 2013, 04:53:41 AM »
got my A1200 up & running with my Indivision AGA MKIIcr, OS3.9 & noticed after installing the HighGfx monitor modes (1024x768) that I get random screen glitches and artifacts after only 5-10 minutes while in WB but if I run a WHDLoad game or program the screen is fine for many hours with no such issues.
I understand the MKII needed a config program to get it working properly but the cr has worked with no problems since I got it so wondering if the config program is necessary & if it will work for the cr as well?

The config program is necessacary for fine tuning your Indy AGA MK2 for your monitor but is not likely going to fix those glitches in high resolution modes.

For that I did a hardware fix that that involves extremely basic soldering skills:

http://aminet.net/package/docs/hard/flickerfix

hope that helps.

While you have it open to do that you may want to stick a few small heat sinks on some of the custom chips, as well.  Just a thought!  ;)

Hiya,

It's worth your while to install the latest config tool and make sure you are running the latest core.

That said, it probably won't fix your glitches because the Mrk2 just doesn't seem as stable as the Mrk1.   To be honest 1024x768 is a bit much of AGA anyway, it seems happier when you run it at 800x600 (SuperPlus) or even 640x512 (PAL).    Unfortunately the Mrk2 doesn't really support SuperPlus properly with the latest core so I'm having to run mine at 640x512.

thanks for the quick responses guys:) found the manual that came with MKIIcr & it does mention pixel flickering might occur while using HighGFX driver due to heat issues so I think I'll reinstall my fan & add a heat sink to Alice tomorrow. I'll also install the latest tool from Jens. Timing fix seems easy enough if problem persists else just go back to 800x600 as that's what i was running before with no issues.

btw, I got rid of my 2'nd CF IDE as my DH0 as they just seem to get corrupted too easily over time and now got my 'real' 2.5" IDE drive in my A1200 which of course gets really hot after a while so getting rid of heat is always a good thing.  Btw, my Subway USB gets darn hot too come to think of it.

I run my workbench in 1024x768 and the display is always rock solid just like any other mode. I run in 16 colors so the speed is pretty good... with the right palette it looks almost like a GFX card.

before doing the hardware fix, you can try one of those software based programs(the readme mentions) that manipulate the palette in the background to patch the problem. If those programs work them it would be totally worth it doing the hardware fix. Just don't confuse this 127r fix with the other "Timing fix" for the ACA and 040/060 accelerators. I'm not even sure this 127r thing is a timing fix...

If those software based fixes don't work, then maybe try putting on additional cooling...

Maybe it's just your color depth?   I tried mine in 128 colors and it worked fine for an hour but then started to glitch a little at 1024x768.   I'm now running it 640x512 and 256 colors and it's rock solid (and looks awesome too!)

Perhaps, buy back before the config tool came out I put mine in 256 color mode and stress tested it pretty well with various programs... I'm pretty sure it does not occur.

Not to say my A1200 does not have other issues :) I think it has failing caps or something that cause flaky behavior with the IDE controller.

Open the top half of the amiga then put any fan above the indivision aga and try again, I had serious heat issues when I installed the mk2 and to keep it cool enough and still as silent as possible I had to use one silent 40mm fan directly above Lisa and 4x 40mm fans at the grils in the top lid.

If I turn the fans off within 5 mins I get artefacts and if I start a whdload game it kicks me to wb within a minute with a obscure error message or guru.

So im one of the unkucky with heavy heat issues so try putting a fan there and keep the lid open and see if it helps.

Some unhappy users did have (Lisa) heat problems even with unexpanded machines when using higher screenmodes. Chip variation?

update: installed a low profile heat sink on Lisa and fan inside the case first thing this morning and my 1200 has been running for 8 hours now with no problems at 1024x768 so problem appears to be solved :-)
I think I'll be using 800x600 as WB is alot more snappy with it on my system though 1024x768 is much faster if I go down to 16 colours. Also haven't tried Jen's tune program yet as all screens seem to be working fine without it so far.

Nice you have it working. :)

I have an Escom 1d4 see sig for specs. I run this for hours in super hi re Hd mode and PAL/NTSC laced and non. Next time I  open the a1200 i'll put a heatsink on lisa just for the hell of it. Cant hurt!

Is there  a newer version of the indy config tool? I thought the classic amiga rtg stuff was complicated sometimes but wow that tool is like some MIT sh8t. hahah

whats the latest version?
