NTSC A1000 to PAL?
« on: July 04, 2013, 01:32:11 PM »
I have an NTSC Amiga 1000. It has an 8361 Agnus, presumably.

I am pretty certain there is no way to soft-push this machine to PAL mode. If I were to replace the 8361 with an 8367 (PAL version of Agnus), would the system be a PAL system, or are things more complicated than that?

It would be nice to be able to watch demos on this Amiga but, of course, basically all demos are semi-broken on an NTSC machine in NTSC mode.

Thanks.

You probably need to change the oscillator as well
Amiga 1200/030 50mhz, 64mb ram

Amiga 2000, 030 25mhz, 7mb ram, A2320,  SCSI2CD

Amiga 3000/030 25mhz, CF SCSI card

Amiga 4000/ 040 33mhz 274mb ram

I think it's harder then you think. I was looking into it some time ago and made a screenshot comparison of the video circuit from PAL and NTSC motherboards. There are few differences , see attached picture.

The easiest way to play PAL games/demos is to use A500.
A500 KS 2.1, 1MB Chip, 68000
A600 KS 3.1, 2MB Chip, ACA630 32MB RAM
A1000 KS 1.3, 8MB RAM
A1200 KS 3.1, Blizzard IV 50MHz 64MB RAM
A2000 KS 2.1, 68030 25MHz, 6MB RAM
A3000 KS 3.1, 68030 25MHz, 16MB RAM
A4000 KS 3.0, 68040 25MHz, 16MB RAM
CDTV KS 3.1, 4MB RAM
CD32

I bought an A1000 earlier this year and it was a US model. I need to use a 240/120VAC transformer (why can't everyone use 240VAC?). Once when I run Sysinfo it reported it as a PAL machine with a 68010CPU (IIRC). I was confused! I opened it up and it was a big expansion board in there that gave me a total of 1.5MB RAM.

I can check again if you are interested and maybe open it up and have a look. If my A1000 is a pal machine then it is proven they can be modified.

Edit: I think this is the board that is inside

I think most PAL A1000 don't have the daughterboard installed.

I'm not sure I'd use an A1000 for that, an ECS A500 would be better.

However I don't think it is supposed to be that much more complicated than switching the Agnus. The oscillator appears to be optional.

You might have an early Denise that doesn't support Extra Half Bright &  wouldn't count on the composite video outputting colour (either NTSC or PAL standard).
