Best terminal app for WB 1.3?
« on: July 03, 2013, 11:57:34 PM »
I have been inspired by Stephen Jones' A1000 love and video(s):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOQkxZ4nhdg

And have decided to load my A1000 (40MB SCSI drive) up with apps and _loosely_ access the Internet via serial link to my iMac, etc.

I am wondering what the best terminal prog that works under WB 1.3 is - pref w/ ANSI support.

Here's my A1000:

Thanks.

I like BaudBandit for something quick and dirty, and "Online!" for full featured.  They both should run under 1.3 without problems.

@desiv: I seem to recall that JRComm was pretty good too.

Does NComm work with WB1.3?

JR-Comm is nice and works well with WB1.3. I used it a lot back in the day. Now I use Term, wich does not work with 1.3.
Life sucks. Then you die. Then they throw mud in your face. Then you get eaten by worms. Be happy it happens in that order... My Amiga 1200

So does ncomm suport Ip connections, i.e. telneting to a BBS?

Also do any of these support the MS-DOS ANSI codes?

Any Amiga term prog should support MS ANSI, and should deal with telnet connections just fine with the proper telnet*.device.

Check Aminet for whichever telnet .device would suit your needs best,   There's several.

I've had some experience in the past with ANSI editors and terminal programs on the Amiga applying it's colour standards which destroys the ANSI art.

But that was sometime ago now, 20+ years. (scary)

Not really a problem these days as telnet boards operate through a web browser just fine.

But you can't beat a proper terminal in full screen. Will have a play, thanks Duce :-)

Well, the rub is in the definition of "support"... ;-)

I had one Amiga terminal program (can't remember which) that came with it's own IBM ANSI font to better display the ANSI ART on the BBSes...

I'll have to try the telnet.device(s).  I've only done telnet BBSing from my A1000 with a serial to ethernet bridge.  I'll have to try the software .device on my A1200...

Thanx for the heads up.

p.s.  @blakespot, That A1000 is a thing of beauty!!!  Nice!!!!

I wrote a program that you runs windows box (c# .NET) and allows you to connect you Amiga via serial and do various things like send and receive files, search Aminet & download, gateway out to BBS systems, etc... if interested...

I'm also 100% sure NComm does IBM ANSI art perfectly if you install the font.

I tried out both NComm and JR-Comm recently and they both work fine on my A500 with Kickstart 1.2. Both support ANSI gfx when picking the right font, however I found that JR-Comm is significantly faster + it has some more terminal emulation modes to choose from. Does anybody know what the latest version of this excellent piece of software is? And does anybody know how to contact the author (John P. Ranigan)? Maybe he would agree to put it on Aminet...

You should be able to create a SLIP connection on OS 1.3 using AmigaNOS; https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!msg/comp.sys.amiga.datacomm/2bgw_yNen4Q/MHf3X7xQVpwJ

Significantly faster how?  Connection speed should depend on the serial.device, the modem and preference settings.

I never used JR-Comm.  If it is freeware these days, I might try it.  I remember moving up to NComm to get ANSI capability.  At the time, I was very impressed with it.  IIRC, the full last version is available today on Aminet (freeware?).

Problem with ANSI usually always falls back to the font issue.  Use the right font and you'll rarely see issues.
