MP3 to what?
« on: July 03, 2013, 03:28:49 PM »
After reading a few posts about MP3 files taking up CPU power, I have decided to get all my MP3 music files and convert them.
BUT to what? In other words what is the best to convert to and still maintaning some sort of reasonable quality, and using much less CPU power.

TIA,

Mike.

The proper thing to do is to not use MP3 in the first place.  Take the original CD audio files or a normal compressed version such as .FLAC or .SHN and use those files.

Once music is in .mp3 format it has already been damaged and you can't repair the damage.

Raw CD audio takes little cpu power.  if you want to play that on your A500 Paula chip then you would convert it down to 8-bit 22Khz.  That will take about 0 cpu power.  It won't sound nearly as good as your CD or your .mp3 versions tho.   It will take a lot of HD space so you will need to hook up a 2TB hard drive to your Amiga.

I had thought about making Amiga games back in the 1990s with raw uncompressed stereo music.  But toooooooo many ppl kept whining and bitching about how it would be "too big" and it would "destroy the internet" and blahblahblah so I never did.

i just did the very same thing ..convert to 16 bit  wav files  ..sounds  good..
i used a pc  program called freemake audio converter ..030/50  with a bit of fiddling with a few settings  plays  them very good  ..8 bit wavs  sound ok an are less on the cpu time..
A500 3.1/8meg/2gigscsi ...wants a 040
CD32/SX1/FMV/FLASHDRIVE/  wants sx32pro
A1200  os3.5 030/50/fpu/mmu/2flashdrives/cd/   indivision coming ..............wants a ppc/060  ACCEL

Yes I am right now using Linux and  a program called Sound Converter from MP3 to16 bit WAV as an experiment, so I was on the right lines.
But thank you for your advice, its been a heck of a long time since I done any kind of sound file converting on my Amiga.

I think the best way to go would be to add hardware based mp3 playback, and leave the heavy lifting to an MP3 playback chip.

What.. oh no.. don't do it like that! Uh.. seriously. Why?

Firstly, don't convert them to mp3 in between, it loses quality. Why don't you just read the CD directly to wav and preserve the quality?

Secondly.. you burn them back to CD?? If you have CD drive on your Amiga, why don't you just listen the original CD directly on it? WTF? Or read the CD to wav/aiff/something directly on Amiga if you want them copied to HD?

You are using the wrong format.  16-bit wav wastes all the cpu power because all the numbers are stored backwards.

Convert to an Amiga IFF format: .16sv for 16-bit sound or .8svx for 8-bit.

The 16-bit version will take some small cpu power to play on Paula.  The 8-bit version will take no cpu power at all.  Paula will do all the work herself.

Both formats are much faster than .wav.

The true answer is to start off with something better than an mp3 to begin with, but the best way to get good sound on a bog standard 68020+ amiga is by playing 16-bit wavs or aiff's and using Cybersound 14-bit calibration (comes with the play16 archive).
If you use a double scan screen mode then you can play back 16-bit stereo audio at 14-bit 44.1 KHz. If you're not using a double scan mode (hardly anyone does), then it's best to convert your wavs/aiff from 16-bit 44100 Hz to 16-bit 28836 Hz (save as wav or aiff) for absolute best fidelity under PAL (28837 Hz for NTSC).

Yep this is what I do and the Cybersound 14-bit calibration tool made my 14bit AHI playback so much better :)

ACTUALLY!

would be good if someone could build a device like the indivision
except for paula.

piggy back paula on a hardware mp3 player, or better yet, a 16 bit sound interface.
but still retain paula.

make an AHI driver and presto.  $100 sound card.

JENS??

I think Jens already tried that, it's called the Delfina Flipper and it was a flipping disaster ;)

There is an open harware design on Aminet. It is a clockport soundcard with a hardware mp3 decoder. And has AHI drivers.

BAH!
I always forget 80% of amiga owners have got 1200's

Iv only got a 500.

A500's don't have clock ports.
I guess it was just a dream...

I know the flipper was a dud....but oh well.

Wait... You did whát?!? Why would you convert a cd to mp3 (=losing quality) and then back to cd?

I can understand you want to make a copy of a cd, but then simply make a 1:1 copy of it. MP3 is an ok (but not great) format for many purposes, but as it is a lossy format you always get a lesser quality compared to the original. Because of that, you should never use mp3 as a source again, which in your case you did by making a new audio cd by converting mp3 to 16 bit wav.

What you should have done: rip the original cd to 16 bit wav, burn a new cd using the wav-files. Skip the conversion to mp3. Or make a direct 1:1 copy of the original cd. The end result will be the same in both cases.
