I think it can if you make quality bad enough, but it's an another matter if it's sensible anymore. Wav files take lots of storage space, but if you have it enough why not. Good compromize could be using mp2 format, which isn't as heavy as mp3, but compresses still quite well.

Recommend the MAS Player, if your handy you can make it internal.

The MAS Player will decode to free up the cpu for multitasking.

An 060/040 never hurt, but cost a bit more than the MAS Player.

Good luck...

Another long term idea you may want to consider is a big box Amiga.  If you don't mind spending more money on classic hardware, they offer more options and performance as you expand.

Actually WAV's are better quality than MP3's :)

My 060 is powerful enough to make a decent stab at playing MP3's by I still prefer use WAV files with mine.
Life begins at 100 MIPS!

Nice Ports on AmiNet!

My 50MHz '030 manages 1/4 bitrate mono.  It's ok for background music but it won't win any fidelity awards.

I wonder how flac / ogg compares in terms of CPU required.  I see flac is available for the classics.

I really suggest you to try a MAS-Player as it doesn't only play MP3 easily and very nicely but also streaming radio as well.

You can check a test video I made some time ago here:

I've played mp3s on my 54 MHz A2630 with good results (Stereo + Paula14C) using mpega.library but subject to the following limitations:

- Use Integer 020/030 version of mpega.library
- Use 1/2 playback rate (22 KHz)
- Play from the shell (GUIs waste CPU time and won't allow the large buffer size needed)
- Set buffer size to at least 75% of the mp3 and WAIT before playback begins

Yes, definitely if you want to play streams on your Amiga or Mp3's, and what's more, doing other things while playing, a Mas player is a must. Grab one while you can, from AmigaKit.

What I do when I don't use the Mas is to convert the songs to aiff, then you can use Amplifier to listen them right. I use Aiff MP3 Converter on my Pc, and you can convert them in a batch with a click very fast.

Try "Prayer2.0" instead; is good enough on 030

Remember the Mas is an "external" player, it won't grab almost any Cpu use from your miggy. You can run it with a 020, play a Game... while playing some music or listening the radio/stream from the Mas at the same time... Do you think it's expensive, mate?

16 bit WAVS using Hippo Player and internal 14 bit routines with calibration are good, especially if you're using double scan screen modes (playback rate doubles to max 56khz).
