68010 FlipFlop 14Mhz
« on: June 11, 2013, 04:02:24 PM »
Hi All,

Back in the day. I had read an article about buying a 68010 and install a flipflop to change it from runnning at 7mhz to 14mhz. It was in my 2000 years ago. I was wondering if anyone remembers the article? I am not sure if it stayed at the 14Mhz all the time but I do remember having to go to an electronics store and buying a flipflop chip to get the 68010 to work at ~14Mhz.

Thanks for any help.

It's a pretty famous hack. It ends up waiting for ram, but it will be quicker than a standard cpu.

If u want to stay compatible to badly coded games then leave your 7.15909Mhz 68000 in the machine.

If u don't care about compatibility to crap coded games and you some extra speed then buy an accelerator card and you will get an actual noticeable speed boost.

If you want speed then you need faster ram which you get on an accelerator card.

If you want speed then you need L1 Cache which you get on an accelerator card.

if you want speed then you need a faster processor which you get on an accelerator card.

Playing games with a silly 14Mhz 010 which is a slow cpu with slow instructions and nonexistent fastram and nonexistent L1 cache won't achieve anything meaningful.

Move.L Dx,Dy and most other common fast instructions takes 4 cycles on the 68010.  Ugh.  It only takes 2 cycles on a slow crappy old ancient 1987 68030.  That means a 14Mhz 68030 gets a double speedboost over a 68010.

Move.L Dx,Dy only takes 1 cycle on a 68040. (4x speedboost over 68010)
Move.L Dx,Dy can only take 0.5 cycles on a 68060.  (8x speedboost over 68010)

There is no reason to break compatibility with old badly coded games by plugging in a 68010.
Wanna try a wonderfull strategy game with lots of handdrawn anims,
Magic Spells and Monsters, Incredible playability and lastability,
English speech, etc. Total Chaos AGA

Except that accelerator cards are rare and expensive, compared to 68010's that are $5 on ebay all day long.  ;)  I ran one in my A500 for years and never had any compatibility issues, $5 for a 5% speed boost, sure, why not?  LOL.  ;)

So he should get a 040 or 060, wouldn't that break compatibility also ?!

You could have 68000 doing one thing and 10 doing something else ;)
