@ Magnetic, oh. would IE not run well on it?

thanks for the tip! Maybe i'll give it another go later. I've been slowly building my own 'classic wb' from scratch over the last 12 months - lots of hard work researching, downloading trying stuff out and configuring/breaking everything and I'd hate to abandon it at this point:)

@OP, if you go for the older version, you can make 3.0/3.1 look far more modern/cooler with scalos, though i'm sure it must bring a bit of a performance hit.  I think i messed up the install (don't ask) and ditched it fairly quickly - just didn't work right, really looked nice though.

tbh I like the newer styles but think the older look works better on an old CRT tv, which is what i'm using but these things all come down to personal taste of course.

Hi,

What do you guys think is the best OS for an Amiga 1200?
I have an Blizzard 030 @ 50mhz and 32mb on board and a 4gb CF card.

I'll be wanting to run WHDLoad and will want it to look as cool as possible.

I've got a Wifi Easynet PCMCIA card too so I want to be able to install drivers and get online

I think it's time to pimp my old 3.9 thread -> 3.9 setup thread

i'd also go with 3.1 and not 3.9 because 3.1 was the last real Commodore OS and has less bloat.

Actually, 3.1 was published by Village Tronic, not Commodore. So 3.0 would be the last "real" Commodore OS.

As for bloat, OS3.9 is obviously larger than older versions, but far from bloated. OS3.0 is bloated compared to eg. OS1.2, so by that logic OS1.2 or some similar vintage would be best.

I still think on an A1200, 3.1 plus 8-color Magic WB and Magic Menu ToolManager Dock MUI capture the Amiga Look and Feel better than anything else.

Plus its fast, uses little precious chip ram,  icons actually look like what they're supposed to represent, the "3D" look is consistent from the icons to the menu's to the docks.

It takes a fair bit of effort to get it going though, but thats part of the fun.

If you can''t be bothered than Classic Workbench.

3.9 with some little updates can look pretty good and even run pretty fast with AGA.

@OP

You might find this post useful for setting up a 3.1 install.

Just use the driver for your wireless card instead of cnet.device.

I downloaded Classic Workbench a few months ago.  As I recall it was over 200 megabytes so I tossed it; Now that's bloat!  ;)  IMHO you can achieve a much cleaner and faster system by just doing it yourself and picking & choosing which updates you want but that's pretty time consuming, just ask me when I was 19 years old and would stay up till 4am every night tweaking every setting down to the individual pixels in my icons so everything would be "just right"!  ;)  **grin**
