My Finnished AMIGA 1200.
« on: June 04, 2013, 05:55:18 PM »
Thanks to everyone for helping me make my decisions with my Amiga.

I bought an A1200 with faulty video, it worked through RGB but with a red tinge, which I wasn't really happy with. I don't have the tools or expertise to fix it myself so I'm going to send it away to someone who does.

I've bought a replacement motherboard which arrived yesterday.

Just put it all together.

A1200
Blizzard 030 @ 50Mhz with 32 MB
4GB CF HD
Easynet PCMCIA wifi card (which I have no idea about how to use or how to set up as I've only got Workbench installed and WHDLoad)

I bought a replacement second hand case and a brand new keyboard so that it looks almost as good as new, apart from the warped case at the bottom left, which I've noticed has happened to my brothers as well, must be a heat thing.

I have a few 1200's, and they all have that same gap where the cases join in the front middle. For example (from www.commodore-amiga-retro.com):

You can just detect the affect even from this 1995 advert for a brand new Amiga:

And this one is a photo of a brand new NOS Petro unit, with the gap clearly visible:

So all in all I think they were like it from new. With age you do get a sagging affect where the whole unit saggs under its own weight (even worse if it's been stored in its polys)...and to fix this I fit an extra rubber foot in the middle of the Amiga towards the front, but set back from the front middle screw. This I don't believe has anything to do with the gap though, but I may be wrong. Personally I think the screw holes are cut slightly out of place so it "squeezes" that section. Anyway... definitely not heat related.

When storing Amiga's in their polys, I always store them upside-down; this prevents the unit from sagging, and helps revert it if already present.

Congratulations on building your new Amiga. I hope it gives you many years of fun.

Haha, as if??!? I didn't think they'd be like that from new, I can rest my mind now.

Cheers for the comments. :)

I don't know to be honest, the card came from ebay like this.

I was dubious about buying it with the fan on it. Thought perhaps it had a problem that they were masking with a fan, but perhaps they were just prolonging its life by adding the fan?

Yeah when i had my 1200 mine was sagged in the middle too.

The 1200 was very cheaply made compared to the older Amigas

the quality difference in the 500 vs the 1200 for example is major.
commodore cut corners where ever possible it seems.

I dunno. I thought they were all a bit shoddy. I used to have a 500. They all creaked like old wooden ships, they all turn brown with age. And those ridiculous rf modulators were just appaling.
The way the plastic cases have screw threads that easily worn away was poor too. But to be fair they were probably on some kind of a budget.  Suppose I better give em a break!! Lol
