A4000T (a bunch of issues, please help!)
« on: May 29, 2013, 04:26:51 PM »
Hello everyone!
Let's start with my specs shall we?
I have an A4000T with a cyberstorm 60, maxed out on ram. Hydra card (ethernet) CD rom (not sure what brand, internal) and a CD Rom Mediavision External, workbench 3.1, Video toaster 4000, Par, and TBC4. (No display cards!)
It's been years since I have fired this thing up, but I am trying to get it back and updated!
Now here's the first issue I am currently having:
When I boot up, it endlessly seeks the floppy disk until I put one in, then it stops, in the meantime it keeps seeking and seeking. I'd like to fix this one first!
The next issue is that I am trying to transfer a bunch of files to and from the Amiga from my pc (or mac, I have both). I have miami and I am trying to use an ftp client on the Amiga, but the client (I forget which) will not let me send over FOLDERS, just files. Remember, this is workbench 3.1, not sure if there are better FTP clients out there.
Next issue: Miami doesn't pull my DNS servers, so I'm not sure how to configure it properly for internet access, I have intranet access.
Next: I have some installers that need to have the folder mounted as a drive I think, I forget the command line thing for this, please help!
And lastly, about upgrading, what is the latest compatible AmigaOS that will work with what I have?
Thanks for your time!

I can't help with all your problems but the floppy issue is most likely to be in the drive itself. When you say 'seeking' do you mean that the drive light is on and the head keep seeking? Maybe there's a problem with the disk presence switch? If you have a drive from any other amiga, you could plug it in in place to prove/disprove the drive is at fault.

Oh, and OS3.9 is the latest you can install without a PPC card. Classic workbench is also possible if that appeals to you.
You really need an RTG card for OS3.9 in my opinion though.

Regarding the installers... do you mean the Assign command? Such as:

Assign volumename: sys:myprograms/myprogram

Regarding the OS, 3.9 is the latest but requires 3.1 roms. You should be able to pick up new A4000T 3.1 roms if you haven't already got them. Or you might be able to soft kick 3.1 or a 3.9 custom kickstart. I'm a 3.1 A1200 user so I'm not much help in the 3.9 area.

I use AmiFTP. Not sure about other programs, but I can't say I've tried sending drawers, so no help there from me. I suppose you could always zip files from your Amiga and send whole drawers that way if you're struggling.

Good luck, hope you sort out your problems. ;)

No, this is not an emulation, this is a full tower, A4000T with 3.1. I can't zip, I have LHA on the Amiga side, but that doesn't help me when sending from the pc. I can't burn CDs because none of the Amiga drives can see burnt disks.

I am an IT analyst, this is a floppy drive seeking ONLY at boot issue, it's software, the drive functions normally.

Last compatible o/s would be 3.9.
4.x needs ppc cpu.

DNS servers, just get the addresses from some other machine on your network and then enter them in Miami settings.
Most routers will reserve a range of addresses for static ips or let you configure that if you can't use DHCP for some reason.

Seeking as in the drive access light illuminates?
Does it do this if you boot with no startup-sequence? (hold both mouse buttons down after a reset to turn off the startup-sequence to test out.)

You can extract lha archives under Windows with 7-Zip: http://7-zip.org/

And extract zip archives on Amiga with UnZip: http://m68k.aminet.net/package/util/arc/unz542xA
