Make a custom-chip based pci card instead...

Just thougt i check the interest of an custom-chip based pci card for your Aone/Pegasos,  instead of building a new, and third new-school amiga platform. The pci card, with custom chip on it  is what i want. nothing else.
Must be hell of a lot easier to design and build. And time saving i guess. So...

1. Would you prefer the ak5/ak6 or a pci card design?
2. Why?

I'd go for the ak47 version..
Sorry couldn't help myself, may I ask what ak5 and ak6 are? Please forgive me for not knowing if this is something everybody knows what is... :-P

There's no point in a custom chip PCI card. The chips couldn't be accessed in any system friendly way.

UAE = Cheaper and better (more comaptible with software than real Amiga Chips).

The custom chips are not made any more! They CAN'T be made anymore.

Well "can't be made" is a bit strong, it could be done when you have lots and lots and even more then lots of money..

They process use to make them isn't used any more, even if the masks still existed...

So you would have to design and make the chips from new!!!

Custom chipset card would probably only make sense in a 68k system since on a PPC you have to emulate anyway.

A custom chipset could be made by using some programmable logic chips and some VHDL code so the lack of chips would not be a problem. Could be a cool project but probably pointless.

I would recommend writing a simple custom chip to GFX board mapper instead by using the CPU's MMU feature to allow running some porly written apps that don't promote very well. For games that make full use of the hardware there are UAE. (Not the 'United Arabe Emirates')

So apart from having lots and lots and even more then lots of money one needs to have patience.. Hell, Amiga users have plenty of that... Offcourse having a degree/experience in custom chip design would help a little.

How about doing what UAE can't do -- read Amiga floppies on a PC?  Paying almost a hundred dollars for that Flipper/Catweasel/Whatevertheycallit, is a bit extreme.  It doesn't have to support every possible disk format, just Amiga.

How about, dare I suggest it, a PC 1.4 Meg PC floppy controller hacked onto an Amiga card, such as the PCMCIA slot of the A1200.  I'd love one of those, and it can't cost as much as a custom-engineered logic chip with a PCI bus designed only for the PC?

Also, is it true that the original blueprints for the AGA chipset were lost/stolen/destroyed somehow?

Well, even if they were not, they would be useless now.

Untrue, there are still 14 founderys worldwide capable of producing the proper NMOS silicon used in the Amiga chips.

1- Well for flexibility I'd choose it on a PCI card. Like that it could be used on A1's Pegasus, even PCs thus raising sales.
