Elbox Mediator 1200 LT4 PCI locking up
« on: May 25, 2013, 11:28:45 AM »
Ahh yes the joys of the Mediator. RTG Voodoo goodness so close yet so far.

After reinstalling/uninstalling drivers over and over I have admitted defeat :-/

1) I can get it to detect the the Voodoo card and even the SB128 card. PCIINFO shows both.

2) After following the instructions the voodoo modes are showing and I can select between them but when I save it locks up.

3) I've tried using the updated pci library.

I am using an ATX to AT adapter to power the mediator (and the A1200 through the mediator). Doing this with a 300W ATX PSU.

It's a v1.0 going by what is on it, I've been told it was working fine with the same Voodoo card.

Have read a few posts but no real solution :-/

I've set the jumpers:

8MB / CONFIG ON / WAIT ON.

Have emailed Elbox so will post here any updates.

LOL at the moment it's all sitting naked on the desk but yes. Apollo 060, other mods are in my sig.

Have it all fitting nicely together even with the indivision :-)

With the Mediator it doesn't fit in my custom case so will need to look for a full tower, not a midi which is a shame :-/

Will have another go this afternoon.

Sadly Ive had no luck getting this to work. Just end up getting lock ups when I try switching to the the voodoo card screen modes.

Swapping the card to different slots also doesnt help. PCIINFO shows that it has detected the card but still no joy.

Have tried the another voodoo card and same result so will assume its not the card.

Picked up a 5 volt ATI 9200 boots okay with it but doesnt detect the card properly unknown device when I run PCIINFO.

Anyway one more shot tomorrow night then it all goes into a box and Ill be on selling.

Maybe get a brand new mediator, expensive lesson :-/

Hi Lurch,

try these elbox-Files: http://www.a1k.org/forum/showthread.php?t=35427

It is pci.library 10.0 included which also works with OS 4.x.... first of all replace the pci.library
Save Planet Earth! It is the only one in the galaxy with fresh and cold beer

For Apollo 1260 you should set Mediator jumpers as "Config=CLOSED, Wait=OPEN". Try also setting "Memory Window=8MB" first (oops you already had that).

You could try my BPPC-Mediator-Voodoo setup guide if that helps. It's mainly targeted for BlizzardPPC-owners but there's some general info too.

Cheers guys, have tried the above.

When in Picasso96 mode and I click edit it locks and I have to reboot.

When I tried installing nlist I had a runtime error and had to reboot, the other applications installed fine.

If I use the AHI that comes with the original MMCD disk (not sure what version) I get a runtime when opening it's preferences.

I've set the jumpers to 8MB / CONFIG ON / WAIT OFF as a re read of the manual suggests Wait should be off.

Is something conflicting with my Apollo 060?

If I remove the Mediator I dont get software errors in the apps I've tried. Of course anything related to the Mediator doesn't work as it's not installed.

Guessing I'll have to start from scratch again :-(

Could be defective MACH chips. As I now recall, I also had my problems with Mediator LT4 and it was due to some faulty chips - it was also locking up with Voodoo IIRC. After Elbox sent me working ones, replaced them and Mediator was working fine again.

Hmm, I have the coloured dots and a couple of stickers. So assume these are updated chips?

So it's 13 Pounds for a new set? I've emailed Elbox a couple of times no reply. One for registration and one for support.

Most likely because I bought it second hand.

Thinking I'll return it and buy a brand new one :-(

Kind of over it at the moment, although the person I bought off said he had it working with the same cards he sent with it so not sure.

Coloured dots should mean updated chips. Try re-seating the MACH chips.

Okay so I reseated the mach chips, and now I either get software error when I click on screenmodes or recoverable errors when selecting a Voodoo mode.

A question, how warm/hot do the mach chips get?

It's unfortunate you're having problems with the Med. I just tried the temperature on the chips and yes, they tend to get pretty hot but that's normal I think.

Give the Mediator a good'ol slap-around like you did with an old tube tv! :)
Have you tried with JUST the Voodoo attached? And, double-check that all cards are attached properly and did I yet mention cleaning the contacts with isopropyl alcohol?
Also one other thing springs to mind: try a different PSU.

Did you clean the sockets and chips with IPA?  Just re-seating might not be enough.

Also if your A1200 edge connector is worn/dirty it can cause issues as can the pass-through if that is heavily worn.

Another important thing is a good serviceable A1200, preferably with caps replaced and decent PSU (good steady 5v)
