Amiga 4000 speed issues!
« on: February 02, 2004, 07:22:30 PM »
Gentz-
I just mounted my A1200 HDD into my A4000 using the correct adapter and it works correctly with no drive-related issues.

The A1200 from which the drive came from had 128MB of RAM, DCE 68040 @ 33Mhz. Scan Magic.

The A4000 has 12MB or RAM the battery killed a SIMM socket before I could get to it.
While running SYSINFO, it is showing that I am running SLOWER than a stock A4000, and it feels slower too.

I understand that the A1200 was faster and had more RAM, but this is a small jump from 33 Mhz, to 25 Mhz.

Should I replace the 68040 library?

Any suggestions?

Is there any thing else I need to do when going from one 68040 to another??

Thanks!

@MaDDuck:

How much slower than a stock A4000 does sysinfo say it is?

If you have the standard Commodore 040 card (A3640), it should definately feel slower than the DCE card of yours. The A3640 is the slowest 040 card which exist for the Amiga as far as I know.

According to SYSINFO, I am .77!!!

BTW, I am running KS3.1, and WB 3.9

I've already killed the clock, workbench and window background pictures, and reduced the color palette.
It didn't help much!

SO............
Now all I have to do is unload the DCE 68040 @ 33 with the SCSI card and get a faster card for the A4000!

oh, and.......
it feels MUCH slower, almost as bad as my OLD A3000 with an 68030 @ 25 in it.

It's just too darn slow!

AND also the Scan Magic wil not show any blue at all!?!?
Any suggestions? I tried it in two Amigas, a A1200, and A4000. and on two different monitors- same thing!
Looks fine, works great- just no BLUE!

Any one want to swap a DCE 68040 @ 25Mhz. and SCSI add on board for ANY 68040 A4000 board other than the stock Commodore one???

I just thought I'd ask......
I've had VERY good luck swapping with fellow Amiga.org ppl!

Yes Your a4000 will feel slower than your A1200 with its 040 card because the A4000 with A3640 has very slow memory access.  To be honest i found that my A4000 really came into its own when i added a graphics card AND a CPU upgrade.  Sure a cpu upgrade will improve things but then you have to deal with slow AGA scrrenmodes unless you run in low res video modes.

good point......

In the (not too distant) future, I see adding a graphics card and perhaps a Mirage PCI setup.

But for now, a faster processor will make Quake and Breathless more bearable!

And it might also help my general performance and speed up my web browsing, and other non-FPS related things.
