can't find atapi.device off Emergency floppy OS 3.9
« on: May 06, 2013, 11:01:49 PM »
So, I'm trying to do a clean install of 3.9 from an emergency floppy but on boot the floppy can not find the CD drive.  This is on an A4000 and an IDE drive.

It usually says that it can't find the "asim_atapi.device" unit 1.  I've changed it to atapi.device or changing the unit, with no love.

The current install is classicWB and a sort-of asimcdfs install.

Anyone know whats up with this?

Either change device to scsi.device (if you want to get rid of asimcdfs) or copy asim_atapi.device to the emergency disk (if you want to continue using asimcdfs, but then you also have to install asimcdfs again).

Changing unit is stupid if you didn't change the hardware because the unit number has to match the place on the IDE cable where the drive is connected to. Unit 0 = master, unit 1 = slave.

I got that part sorted by just wiping and installing os 3.1, then installing idefix97 for cachecdfs.  Now when I boot with the Emergency Floppy, the system hangs with a thinking bubble on an unresponsive workbench screen.

Yeah, I figured changing the unit was stupid after using "finddevice" in the idefix97 install :)

Perhaps the same problem as before. During installation of IDEfix, in the FindDevice program you should select scsi.device and not atapi.device. After that during the creation of the emergency disk when you are asked whether you use IDEfix or SCSI you should select SCSI. If you do these two steps, your emergency floppy will be completely independent of third-party products.

Thanks, Thomas!  So all I have to do is highlight device and make sure to choose scsi.device instead.  sweet!

In 3.9 atapi.device functionality is similar to scsi.device afair, just different names.

atapi.device is not part of OS 3.9, it is part of IDEfix. And it might conflict with OS 3.9, depending on the version of IDEfix.
