Moving to an SD card
« on: May 03, 2013, 03:38:45 PM »
Hello, at the moment I have Workbench and all other software installed on a CF card. On my A500+ I access this through an IDE to CF card adapter. However my laptops do not have a place where to insert a CF card; they only have a place for an SD card.

Therefore I was thinking of moving my setup to an SD card (easy access from my laptop) and then I buy an SD to CF card adapter for the A500+ (no change to my setup).

However I do not know if anyone has tried this out and had any problems? Do all SD cards work on an original A500+ (considering I have an SCSI to IDE to CF and now to SD). Or this will most probably not work at all!?

I've used SD and even xD cards as hard drives in my A500, using a MechWare SCSI card reader, no problems.  I stuck with CF because (theoretically) I think it's faster, but no reason you couldn't use something else.  Only issue is, as you say, having a whole lot of adapters plugged into each other.

As an alternative, why not one that offers both CF and SD, you could use the CF as your primary, and then just pull out the SD when you want to transfer some files over?  Something like one of these maybe:

They work, but they are slower than CF cards.

You could probably find an IDE to SD adapter more easily than a CF to SD adapter. Theoretically any adapter/card should work, but there are always odd ones that don't.
