A500 ide68k SD card checksum error(s) ?
« on: April 27, 2013, 05:43:20 PM »
I have finally managed to install ide68k into my A500. From the hw perspective everything seems to be working ok. Amiga sees DH0 and DH1 partitions. On DH0 boot priority is 0, max transfer rate is set to 0x001FE00, I can (quick)format both of the partitions but ! When I try to install WB 3.1 from a floppy disk, I get a ton of: AmigaOS (which is the name of my boot partition) has a checksum error on disk block .... the number changes.

I'm using a 2 GB SD card along with SD2IDE adapter which is partitioned with 2 partitions:

1. 340 MB boot partition
2. 1.4 GB storage partition

using FFS file system.

I'm not sure what am I doing wrong.
Please advise.
Thanks.

Well, I've done the SD prep all over again, using FitzSteve's tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd42RsKHm5Y) and I still have a problem.

Will try and replace sd2IDE with cf2IDE adapter since nothing else comes to mind.

A lot of reviews of these SD2IDE adapters suggest that they suffer from errors :( shame as it would be quite a nice solution for me too.

Have you tried doing a full format on DH0? It won't take long, it's only 340MB. If it does a full format successfully then there's nothing wrong with DH0.
Try entering 0x1FE00 as the maxtransfer instead (on both partitions remember). Even though it's the same value it might not be reading the leading zero's correctly.

Yes, tried all of that. It formats all right, but as soon as i start writting data it cheksum errors me. I've even tried using HdInstTools as an alternative to HdToolBox and nothing. It must be the adapter then or the card itself. Its a new card though. Will try another one.

Ph%%ck yeah ! I can't believe I've finally managed to make this thing work !
It was the malfunctioning IDE CABLE I ripped of a dead PC that was givin me the headaches. There's nothing wrong with my SD2IDE adapter, SD card, Ide68K or a bunch'o'other stuff I thought were the cause of my problems. Nope, the old, yellow, smelly ide cable.
In either case, here are 2 images I took last night. Will take more later.

Nice! Good job! From your first photo above it looks like your next project should be the motherboard mod to convert that A501 of yours into an additional 512K of usable chip ram. ;)

Just in case you need 'em, here's the instructions I followed to do mine.  There's about a million different ways of doing this mod, but this one seemed the easiest:

Man, I almost died last night ! :)

I decided it's time to do the famous 1 MB chipram hack, right ?
So, I pulled out my half broken, for spare parts only rev 6a mbo, followed
the simple instructions, cut the lower trace on JP2 jumper, did the same on JP7A, then took out my soldering iron, and connected the upper and middle connection on JP2. Everything went well.

Connected the bare mbo to psu, 1084 and a fdd, booted into wb 2.1, and voila, 800-ish kb of chipram free, 0 kb other mem. Yeeah ! I'm da man, right ? NOT QUITE !

So, after that, and with a gigtone of confidence, I pulled out my true Amiga, and repeated the above steps in the exact same order. And ... nothing happened. All I got was a blank screen and a flashing keyboard light ! Whaat ?! 5 short flashes, one long, and I think one more then a reboot. Although there was nothing on the screen I could tell Amiga rebooted itself.

At that point I think my heart stopped. Twice !

So, after an hour or two of thinking what could've gone wrong, googlin around trying to find any info on those mind shattering flashes and, in utter despair, I then decided to turn the connections back as they were.

! PRAISE THE LORD ! THANK YOU JESUS ! It worked. Everything was back to normal.

Now, with my hands still shaking, I think I'll reconsider doing this again.

But, why didn't it work the 2nd time ? What do all those flashes mean ?

To tell you the truth Paul, I don't know. The Amiga was flashing me, sometimes with a power led and sometimes with a capslock led. When I saw there was no image on the screen I went back to my soldering iron to try and correct whatever i messed up and never connected it back to my 1084. Every time i soldered some more i just connected the keyboard and watched for those flashes. When i was ready to give up, i gave it one more try, this time with monitor connected to it. Still flashed at me, 5 short, 1 long and then a reboot. Then i set down, lit a cigarette and then a funny thing happened. I got a guru message. An actuall image on the screen ! Telling me to press the left mouse btt to reboot. After that it booted to wb. That was yesterday when i reverted everything back from an unsucessful hack. Today, i did the hack once more and everything went well.
