UAE and HD from an A4000
« on: April 27, 2013, 12:05:18 AM »
Hi everyone, I have dug out an old A4000 with an IDE hard drive in it and would like to pull some data off it. It boots ok and I was wondering what emulation software would be best for installing it in a Windows PC so I can copy data off it. Would I need something like Amiga Forever? Thanks in advance for your help.

Amiga Forever will work.  Since you already own an Amiga, you can also use just WinUAE.  Downloading WinUAE is free.  Amiga Forever, however, is s very reasonable cost, and comes with the ROM files as well as a pre-configured Amiga OS 3.1 setup.  All you have to do is connect your A4000 IDE drive to a free IDE cable in your PC, add it to the existing OS 3.1 set up and boot it up.

Installing Directory OPUS will help facilitate transferring files over to your PC.

Also, you can setup a WinUAE configuration that can actually run your A4000 IDE drive in an emulated A4000 environment, except it will be alot faster.  Also, you can set up Picasso Graphic modes to increase display speed as well increase resolution and colors.  I've actually set up a 2.5" 60 GB IDE hard drive in a PC with WinUAE, then transferred it to a real A1200 seamlessly.
A1000 - 2 Floppies, 2 MB RAM, OS 1.0-1.3
A500 - 170 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, OS 1.3/2.04
A2000 - 350 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 2.04
A2500 - 540 MB HD, 8 MB RAM, A2630, OS 3.9
A1200 - 20 GB HD, 64 MB RAM, Blizzard IV
Amithlon - 49 GB HD, 768 MB RAM, PIII-1G
AROS - 80 GB HD, 2 GB RAM, P4-3.2GHz

You can make an Image file of your drive with Winuae and then run the image in Winuae. Easier than having an old IDE drive hooked up all the time.
A2500 owned since 1993 with A2630/DKB 2632, DKB Megachip, GVP EGS Spectrum, A2320 and GVP HC+8 on the inside and a DCTV on the outside. A4000D with CSPPC, Cybervision 64 and a Flicker Magic flicker fixer. A4000T Toaster Flyer & CSMKII. All systems completly retro and classic and mostly used to do geometic art as in my avatar.
