Don't forget how primitive the early 3D cards were though - none of this hardware T+L and stuff. Plus they didn't have much memory so you'd still need to texture upload a lot (2MB for the S3 ViRGE, and that included the frame buffer!).

If the card has enough vram for the textures then you'll only be sending it a drawlist.
It's not just the through put, but also the latency...

I know my uncle had a 3D card in his 486, but i dunno if it was an ISA card. Might have been a VLB card.

Edit: Looks like not a 3D chip, (S3 virge was 1st 3D from S3)

I think I may have a good news, the SBC I have contains Chips
                        and Technologies 69000 video chipset which looks like supports OpenGL, so I might be good to go!
