FS: Phase5 PowerUP PPC for 1200
« on: March 17, 2013, 03:39:38 PM »
Hi all,

Just wanted to let you know I'm selling a Phase5 PowerUP PPC board if anyone is interested.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Amiga-1200-Phase5-PowerUP-PPC-160MHZ-with-68040-25MHZ-/121082249506?pt=UK_VintageComputing_RL&hash=item1c31108122

I also have a few other things that I'll get listed at some point including a 1200 motherboard, a EZ-IDE board with original floppy, some drives and other stuff. I'll post here again once I have sorted it all out.

With this forum having a heavy US following, it is surprising that you won't ship to the states.

I am now only willing to send the item overseas if the buyer arranges collection.

Anyone clue in an ignorant American what "collection" means?

Exactly what it sounds like: You pay FedEx etc. to pick the item up from a specific location on a specific day and they deliver it to your house.

I will sell to anyone in any country but I had soooo many people requesting shipping costs to various countries I simply didn't have the time to find all the prices. Everyone wants the cheapest shipping cost possible and this way they can find the best price to their country and they can decide what level of insurance to pay on the shipping. Websites like Parcel2go make arranging collections pretty straight forward... as long as you don't have a dozen different locations to price up.

Excuse me, isn't this a very inferior card? I mean the PPC end is very weak and it is a 68040 card at that...so really you are stuck not enjoying fully either world of 68k or PPC at all.

it isnt very top notch, but i have a scppc with 604/150mhz, i wouldnt resign on 060 though. its possible to upgrade, but must be done by someone experienced i guess.

Assuming for argument sake you did manage to upgrade the 68k to 68060 and squeeze 50 Mhz out of the 68060. You are still stuck with a very weak PPC card. Let us say you managed to squeeze an upgrade to that for a decent 250 Mhz maximum...though I think 200 Mhz seems a more logical squeeze. Wouldn't you be end up spending a fortune upgrading and hacking this card doubling the price of already an expensive card to match that of the top of the line already PPC card for A1200 that goes to 350 Mhz with 68060 @ 50 Mhz in them? I mean the question goes...is it even worth hacking through the card and you still will be stuck with severe bottleneck that comes with THIS type of card.

I think I agree completely with the rest of the community that one should skip A1200 PPC and stick with either a powerful Apollo or Blizzard card.

Coincidently one of the main bidders on the card is a very experienced modder and I've seen cards modded by him fetch some serious coin. I must admit though I am shocked by the sheer amount of interest I have had in the card which also tells me that not everyone in the "rest of the community" shares AmigaClassicRule's opinion.

Top of the line Blizzard card is 380Mhz+ with very high speed memory access. High speed memory access alone changes the way blizzard card performs even at a low 270Mhz. Bvision performance has also increased due to modification where the PCI bus is clocked from min 37.5Mhz to 41.5Mhz.

For the first time I am now going to revealed the benchmarks for PCI bus clocked at AGP speed.

ragemem shows 8/26. This is preliminary and sets a new world record, but its expected to get quicker. The benchmarks may not seem impressive but the test was done with OS4.1 update 5 1024x768 32bit screemode.

stachu? yes it sound like a perfect job for him, the cards he modded go well over 1000eur i guess. i must say i dont understand this fever as well, but i was never a ppc fan. now and then im tempted to sell mine, but somehow i have a better ways of income so mostly let it be.

you can let the card upgrade by stachu, or an other moder but this will likely cost a lot, and i doubt ist worth it for warpos, as i doubt its worth for os4, because even if expensive enough there are cheaper and faster machines available to buy. also im not sure if it is cutting edge, remember some real world benchmarks were rather disppointing. perhaps due to mem interface, i cant tell.

I'm only selling this because it was sitting tucked away at my parents house for about 12-15 years - it was one of those "I'll come back for that later" type things when I moved in to my own place. I'm never going to use it again and I would rather something like this be in the hands of someone who is going to use it.

But by that very same argument, why bother with any Commodore-Amiga gear? It's just a hobby...nothing more, nothing less. As long as people get enjoyment from it then that's all that matters.
