Prometheus work well?
« on: March 09, 2013, 12:12:12 PM »
Does it work well for video, audio and nic?

Is a voodoo 3000 lots faster across zorro III then a Cyber 64 or PIV?

Does a Sound blaster work stable and provide nice audio?

Does a pci nic run faster then a ariandne?

Anyone using this decked out with all 3 cards without issues?

I don't have a prometheus but people who own one seems to be happy with it :)
But i do know that the prometheus must have the DMA upgrade to function with a soundcard and even then it still might be hard. I havent done any searching myself but a friends who own a prometheus havent been able to source some of the required files to get his soundcard working.

ATM Prometheus doesn't work with DMA cards so that pretty much restricts you to RTL8029 & gfx card (well, perhaps some audio card with ability to work without DMA like Terratec128i works on OS4 but I don't know if anybody has tested it). It's quite fast, the only problems you may have is fitting it inside the case. There are 3-pci adapters that could help you to fit it inside normal cases.

Voodoo3 works nicely, it's specially noticeable if you plan to use high resolutions. I also tested Ratte's Radeon9250 OpenPCI driver and worked correctly too.

There's a firmware update and although it's taking some time I guess it will worth it.

It works best for graphics cards.  PCI sound is over rated, but older cards work.  The NIC is limited to 10Mbps so are the other ZII cards.  The is an OpenPCI USB driver that I have not used, but USB NIC dongles can reach speeds of 100Mbps (on my Deneb for example).

For the cost, it is worth it, but the it takes up a lot of space and may obscure the rest of your ZII/III slots.

Really? I always thought there weren't any sounds cards that work with the Prometheus. I've got a drawer full of old PCI sound cards that I've never bothered to try. Can you tell me any models that should work and where to get the drivers? I'd love to try.
