Amiga just CAN'T see CD-ROM drive!
« on: March 03, 2013, 05:05:50 PM »
Hi!

I am in the very last stage of setting up an A500 with Supra 500XP sidecard (SCSI + RAM).

All I have left to do is back the whole thing up to a CD-R.  I have attached a CD-writer (SCSI) to the external SCSI port of the Supra 500XP.

HD-Tools can see the drive (device 4).  MakeCD can see the drive and even do read/writes to it.

BUT I CAN'T FRIKKIN' GET WORKBENCH TO SEE IT!

I have used CD's with OS3.9 a lot, but I've never had to install one on a plain OS3.1 system.

- First, I tried double clicking the CD0: icon included in WB3.1.  Nothing happened.
- Next, I edited the mountlist for CD0: to "suprascsi.device" and set device number to "4" which is the SCSI ID of this drive.  Reboot the Amiga.  Double click CD0 to mount it.  Nothing.
- Third, I say - okay, maybe I need something more advanced.  I download AmiCDFS and install it as per instructions.  I edit the mountlist for CD0 again so that it reflects the "suprascsi.device" and "4" I need.
- I put the AmiCDFS CD0: mountlist in DEVS/DOSDRIVERS
- reboot Amiga
- This time, during boot I get the error message: "C: ADDDATATYPES UNKNOWN COMMAND". (Yes, ADDDATATYPES is definitely in my C/directory).
- When Amiga boots up there is a CD0: icon on the desktop but says: CD0: ??? and when double clicking to open it a window pops up: Not at DOS disk.
- For some reason now, I notice that Multiview won't start when I try to read an Amigaguide document (likely connected to Adddatatypes error).

- Okay, what the heck is happening?
- I remove CD0 from my DEVS/DOSDRIVERS and reboot.
- no ADDDATATYPES error during boot (good!)
- After boot is finished, multiview works again (Yay!)
- I click on CD0 to mount it.  Nothing happens.  Device is definitely mounted, as the device name shows up in my DirMaster utility and others, but when accessed, again I get "NOT A DOS disk".

So...I am stumped.  I can burn CD's with MakeCD but cannot read them back because Workbench will not see this drive.

This is obviously very frustrating.

The only think I can think of is that somehow the Supra controller doesn't like CD drives?  I have the latest ROM revision it in (AMAB6).

I installed AmiCDROM from Aminet and it WORKED right away.

I would still like to know why the others failed, though.

If I remember right, the Supra ROM version can mess things up no end (if it isn't the latest). I can remember problems way back when with the A500 sidecar from Supra.
Since then I have used Asimware CDFS and it has always worked, on everything from my A1200, to A2000 or A4000.
There are times when I'll swear it depends on the phase of the moon though....
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
