Os 2.1
« on: February 28, 2013, 02:05:21 PM »
Hello all,
I have a noob stupid question for the day! :rtfm:

I have setup an Amiga A500 in my game room with OS 2.1, it's seems to work fine but I had an issue with scsi.device not being installed. This came up when I tried to hook up a ZIP 100 drive the OS could not find it, or any drive other than the boot disk. I know about termination and device setup, so that was not the issue.

On my A2000 with OS 3.1, scsi.device is there and the ZIP drive shows right up in HDTools.

I finally installed a set of ZIP tools and it works now, so my question is, do I need to install OS2.05 then 2.1 (since it's an upgrade) to install the missing scsi.device or am I just a total noob? :biglaugh:

Thanks, Dan

Was thinking that.
So is there a 2.x ROM that does not have scsi.device? When I type version scsi.device on the 500 it returns it's not installed or present.

Everything works fine on the 500, just this one anomaly.

What kind of SCSI interface are you using on your A500?

Often, SCSI interfaces by manufacturers other than Commodore used their own SCSI device name, i.e:

omniscsi.device (for devices with GuruRom installed)
suprascsi.device (for SCSI controllers from Supra Corp)

Where did you try to hook it up?

That's what I was thinking.  A stock A500 doesn't have a SCSI port.

As far as I'm aware, most 2.x Roms do not have scsi.device in them, some of the Roms for the 600 starting including this for the 600s onboard IDE. Chances are if you're running a 500 it might have 2.04 Roms which wouldn't have scsi.device present.

Wow good info, thanks.
I should have added some more info. The 500 is docked into a Bodega Bay, and I'm using a DataFlyer Plus (scsi\ide), I can't get the card to recognize any scsi device except for the boot drive, using either the internal cable or the external pass through connector. Now Sysinfo sees it fine, just not the DataFlyer drivers.

I don't have the manual so there may be a jumper set incorrectly or I may not even have the right drivers, I found them with a Google search and it got me going with the boot drive.

My A2000 has 3.1 ROM and OS3.1 and uses a GVP scsi adapter.

The only versions compatible with A500 that have inside the scsi.device are:
- 2.05 (37.300)
- 2.05 (37.350)
- 3.1 (40.63)

Ofc this scsi.device is meant for usage with IDE68k adapter that emulates A600's Gayle.

Every other version like A500+'s (37.175) or A600's (37.299) don't have the scsi.device inside alas you can't use HD's with these ROMS by default.
Theoretically you could use a bootable floppy disk with a startup-sequence that would use LoadModule to load scsi.device into memory and from that part (and after the reboot) if you had an HD installed it would boot :)
Visit my Amiga blog here
- A600: Vampire V3, 128MB, A604n, 16GB CF, Indivision ECS, RapidRoad, MAS-Player + Custom Audio Mixer (internal), HxC SD + Slim floppy (internal)

But if it's hooked up through the Parallel port, then what does the scsi.device matter?
