I want to resurrect an old amiga 600 hard drive
« on: February 15, 2013, 04:01:16 AM »
Hi,

I used to have an Amiga 600 back in 1993. It broke down one day so I pulled out the hard drive and stored it. The rest of the 600 was eventually thrown out.

I just found the drive. Its in good condition. There are no signs of any rust or damage.

The are are a lot pictures and other files on there that have sentimental value.

So I was thinking about resurrecting the drive saving the files to my PC.

What do you think the best method would be ?

I could buy an old A600 and plug it straight in. Or it might also work with a A1200 or an A4000 if I couldn't find a 600 im not sure.

Or mabey I can plug into some kind of cradle that then plugs into the pc and run an emulator ?

If the drive is working I then need a way of copying the files to my PC.

Any ideas.

Thanks,

Mark.

I've wondered this myself, about my old A1200 drives.  I think if you get an external USB chassis (from newegg or wherever), install the drive in it, and plug it into a PC under UAE it should work?  At least that's my thought, still haven't had time to try it out, hopefully someone else on here can confirm!  :)

I'd suggest to connect the drive to a Linux PC (e.g. with an USB adapter) and create an image with dd. Assuming the drive shows up as sdb, the syntax would be something like this:

# dd if=/dev/sdb of=image.hdf

The image should be usable in UAE afterwards.

USB adapters don't work with these really old drives. You'll need to connect it to an IDE port.

It should work in an A1200 or A4000. For the A4000 you need an adapter from 2.5" to 3.5".

Thomas: Many USB enclosures use IDE - why would they not work?   New enclosures are probably almost exclusively SATA but it shouldn't be too hard to find an IDE version...

You need a USB to IDE 2.5 or an IDE port. I have a SATA-IDE 3.5 2.5 with external power for HD repairing. Plug it on your pc and it will give u a message about to format the drive, select NO. Now run WinUAE and create a std A1200 config and in HD section choose :  Add Hard Drive - Pull down until you find the disk (check capacity next to it if you don't know exactly the device.

HD Controller : IDE0   and check Read/Write
Add PC Drives on startup so you can backup it.

If your disk doesn't boots put a bootable disk of DOpus in Floppy 1.

It works 100%, if you have any questions tell me and we will do it via team viewer.

Believe me, it does not work if the drive is too old. ATA standards have changed and USB adapters don't support the very old standards.

An enclosure will not work, either, because the drive does not fit into it. Original Amiga drives (40 MB or less) are full-height drives (twice as high as modern 2.5" drives).

I bought two years ago a USB like this. It is only the plug. Front 3.5 rear 2.5 and in the middle SATA, also a power supply came with this. There is no case to put the HD inside. I backed up 170, 40 and even my old A1200 20MB disk with this.

I have such, too. I works with every drive I own except the really old one from the A600.

And there are many other people on other forums which have the same experience.

I must admit that I never saw such a double-height 2.5" drive before I opened the A600.

Does the drive still works on Amiga? I have a 20MB "fat" that works OK with the USB.

Yes, it did work in the Amiga. I finally used Amiga Explorer to make a backup. Now I am no longer interested in it.

I just wanted to warn that it does not work with just any USB adapter because I am not the only one who experienced this. You seem to own the only USB adapter which works with these drives.

I really did't knew that people having problems with that. Dunno, maybe I'm lucky in this part (cause I had many probs so many years with those old machines). Hey, how much will you think I get if I sell it ;-)

Thomas is right, I had the same problem with A600 drive and USB case.
Better sorry than worry.

I concur --

I was in the same position with my 1200 drive.
could not get DD to work with a USB enclosure.

In the end i had a quick work with the IT / Sys admin bloke at work
and he was ok with me lifting the cover off one of the older Dells we had floating around .

With the aid of an IDE cable and an ubuntu live disk I was able to dump my drive onto a usb stick and then take it home for working with.

I used DD if=xx of=xx command as others have already suggested

I just use a 3.5" to 2.5" converter like the one below:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320665213393?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_sacat%3D0%26_nkw%3D320665213393%26_rdc%3D1

I hook up old laptop drives and CF adapters this way. It's ugly though as I have the wires routed up through an empty floppy bay in my tower.

If there's a USB solution that works then I'd recommend it, as not everyone likes opening their computer up. And if it's anything like mine then it's spaghetti junction in there...I avoid it if possible.
