Which to buy -- Voyager or IBrowse
« on: January 28, 2004, 04:22:50 AM »
What are the cons of pros of Voyager and IBrowser?

AWeb (Open Source) really bothers me especially on this site... it keeps "reloading" the website while the graphics load... VERY annoying! That and t he buttons and graphics within the browser are corrupted.

So I am willing to purchase either Voyager or IBrowse...  :-o  I just needs the cons and pros of each. :-D

I'm looking at the same issue.  My concern is that it doesn't look like the Vapor (Voyager) has updated their site in over a year.  It could just be me, but it's not inspiring me to send them money.   :-o

I'd wait for IBrowse 3 which I hope is available "real soon now (tm)".

Wouldn't it make more sense to release IBrowse 2.4 first? (Who knows.. 3 is being worked on, but there are fixes that are supposed to go in to 2.4.)

Hi :-)

You can go for IBrowse v2.3 or wait for v2.4 or v3.

It's a very good and fast browser, getting better and better at each upgrade, I use it since it's v1.1 version and never regreted my purchase :-)

I bought Voyager v3 too, but it's not really upgraded so often (68k version) and suffer some annoying bugs, and I wait to see the evolution when OS4 will be available.

In respect to that I can't recommend Voyager at the moment, so go to IBrowse with no regrets :-)

Try the demos of both. You'll most likely find that IBrowse is better. Voyager does have a flash plugin, but it's sadly outdated and hardly ever works properly. (Not to mention that certain features of Voyager have not been reimplemented.)

I am actually registered for both Voyager AND IB, but I haven't used Voyager in a year or so now - basically I stopped using Voyager when IB2.3 came out, which was just over a year ago.

Voyager is generally a nice Browser, but unfortunately it is not the most stable of programs, and while it's stability HAS improved of late, it's still dodgy and personally I find nothing more annoying than a crash when you're in the middle of browsing a website, especially if you were entering information you have to remember all over again or you can't remember the URL of where you were etc etc.

IBrowse2.3 on the other hand is very stable on my system, much more reliable and it generally is a more polished off Browser.  It's Javascript support is better than Voyager's, which is more important than FLASH in my opinion.  For example, with IB2.3 you can get on and use MSN's website.  With Voyager you cannot.

If you're asking my advice, I'd definately say go in the direction of IB

IBrowse may be a "bit" slower in some respects, but
it's definately the most stable and overall least
annoying of amiga browsers...

Begin somewhat unrelated rant:

...also the PPC version of Voyager competely hogs
the CPU when scrolling windows or loading "heavier"
sites like EBay, even locking the mouse pointer at
times. I find it just a little amusing that IBrowse *emulated*
eats less CPU than *native* PPC Voyager...

I'm a registered user of bot V3 and IB2.3, but I use IB almost exclusively. Its java handling is miles better and I find IB handles animgifs better.

The only gripe I have is the time taken for IB to load once its cache is over about 25Mb. I had assigned 50Mb caches to both browsers, but IB slowed to a crawl when loading, taking several minutes to fire up. I now use 20Mb which is better and I disabled download caching too.

Buy Ibrowse.

Cheers,

JaX

Be inspired! It\\\'s back!

AWeb to me is like the Opera of PC browsers: the layout is just *wrong* :-)

Voyager 3x annoyed the hell out of me because it installed MUI classes that made other apps crash all over the shop, and Voyager wasn't stable either.

IBrowse 2.3, I bought IBrowse a couple of years ago.  A good, but very basic browser.

ibrowse  is better + STILL in DEV! (on 68k) ,  voyager is so unstable that it make me go aaaarggh!.

anyway ibrowse has crashed 2 times since i updated to 2.3 12 months ago , and i do webbrowse everyday! and ALOT! :)

anyway Voyager developer doesnt have a 68k amiga anymore and its most likely we will never see an update here unless its ppc only (and morphos ONLY most likely) ..

but then again this is a choice u have to take, i am very happy with ib2.3 , its so much better than 2.2 and older versions, i use my amiga for everything (only got amiga so)..

cheers
Whats up with all the hate!

About the corrupted graphics, I advice you to change it (there are many "skin" available in the AWeb package or on Aminet), then the gfx should be ok.

I personnaly use AWeb most of the time because it's fast and stable. But I also use Voyager (PPC) for more complicate site (Flash, SSL ...).
By the way, I did not find the way to use SSL with AWeb.
In the end, you would get Voyager PPC for "free" if you get a Pegasos with MorphOS.

PS: IBrowse is a very good browser compatible and stable, but still crashable :-(
PS2: all of them can crash :-(

Bye
