AGA or NO AGA?...

To anyone who had an a1200 or a4000 and then maybe it croaked or you got a 500, 2000, 3000... Did you really miss aga?

My 1200 is gone, but sometimes I still think about getting something else.
500's are much more common and cheaper. I think I would enjoy doing the
addide upgrades and things too, but I'm wondering if I'd miss aga games and
aga demos that much?

I could probably do without AGA, although it's nice.. ;-)

But what I really like about my 1200  is the IDE(with an IDE/CF adapter), new RAM/Accels, and the PCMCIA...

Beyond that, there are some great AGA games, but there are many many more great non-AGA games...

If the 600 was more popular in the US, that would be a great option too....

I always thought I could cope without AGA. However I have ran into a few games that simply run better in AGA, Frontier elite 2 for example. So now I doubt I would be able to go back.

Go AGA amiga you will regret it once you spend all that $$ upgrading an OCS/ECS machine imho.

I didn't know what I was missing out on, struggled for a couple of years trying to scrape together my A500 plus setup and still wasn't happy.

Bought a 1200 and man it was like night and day. Not just for the AGA option, which the games seem so much better but for the overall experience.

Easy to upgrade, new hardware available. The onboard IDE on it's own was even faster than my SCSI A590 on the 500.

Anway I tried to do a simple timing fix and now my poor 1200 no longer boots so have sent it to Amigakit. Downside is it's xmas/new years so it maybe gone a long time.

So no Amiga 1200 gaming for me over the holiday break. Went back to the 500 but it was a hassle and took up too much room.

So back to WinUAE until the 1200 board gets back :-(

I had a 4000D and a 1200 for a bit, nice machines but IMHO I don't miss them.  I didn't look into AGA games so there wasn't a draw to it.

All the games played are my kids educational ones and they all are OCS/ECS and an occasional entertainment one and I never got into the demo scene.

I have 2 3000D's and they for me have been perfect.  

Game playing aside, AGA, OCS, and ECS are way to slow for productivity.  Once I used a decent graphic card, I never went back to the chips for much.  A video card is the single fastest speed upgrade you can do to any Amiga.    

Do you use you Amiga for games and demos only?  Is there a AGA game that you would really want to play again?  Do you have a budget for this project?

Owning an Amiga these days has so much more to do with emotion that logic, so if you really want to try a different Amiga out this will be the time.

Back in the days I had only an A1200. Never owned a OCS/ECS machine. Now, my main Amiga is an A600. And I don't feel like I'm missing something (although I have an A1200 in the cleaning).
Still, if you do something that requires some speed, plain A500 or A600 will be slow.

Yes.  One day my A4000 broke and I was teleported back in time to my lame old A3000.  Ugh.  It sucked.  Super slow motion 68030 cpu. Super Slow motion gfx chipset.  No more 44Khz music.  Omg it was so depressing.

So I got an A1200T/060 50Mhz 32MB with Flickerfixer and detachable keyboard and Ethernet and PCI slots.

It was such a relief going back to the future.

There are countless games, such as Dune II which are ECS games but they go much smoother and faster on AGA.  The map scrolling is just terribly slow when u play Dune II on ECS/OCS machines.  On AGA the scrolling moves at a normal speed.

Well besides games and demos there are  lots of reasons to have an AGA machine.

1. Faster bus of Advanced Graphics Architecture

2. Psuedo 24bit output of native RGB 15hz output for use for Genlocking/Video Framegrabbing/Animations

3. Makes amiga viable for blue/green screen, replay of digitized video in full frame full color, and other gfx purposes

4. Much easier to upgrade the machine

5. Much more availability of expansions even new hardware

6. The machine will look way "cooler" and more "modern"

I could go on and on... AGA all the way. Its not just for gaming and demoes

I've eventually ended up missing any Amiga I've gotten rid of, but for the most part, I can live without AGA. A1000 and a souped up A2000 are perfectly fine for most all of my classic Amiga gaming and computing uses. Recently acquired a CD32 though and that's been fun to play around with. Despite hooking an A2000 keyboard to it, have no real desire to expand beyond that outside of maybe the new FF/SD of Jens'.
