Trade my Amiga 1200 USB Sub for Apollo 1240
« on: November 25, 2012, 05:38:07 PM »
I am in need of a major Amiga 1200 upgrade to watch movies and enjoy it. The question I have, is it worth it to trade my Amiga 1200 USB Sub for an Apollo 1240 knowing very well I will get my A1200 online and it have PCMCIA for file transfer between PC and Amiga 1200 or you think the USB Sub is very IMPORTANT for the A1200 that I should not even think about doing it or you think USB Sub is just a luxury not a necessasity and I can do without it?

Gonna say it like it is: With 680x0 you're not going to enjoy this one bit, just watch them on your PC.

If you want speed and don't care about USB peripherals, then go for the '040. If you like using lots of USB stuff, keep the USB Sub and buy an accelerator. It all comes down to what you want.

Apollo boards are extremely hard to come by. Why not get one of the ACA accelerators from Individual Computers? The Subway card is worth holding on to if for no other reason than easy access to Flash storage.

If you want to play movies on your Amiga, it's important to know that the kinds of movies you download from YouTube or torrent sites will never work on a 68k Amiga. Even and 060 is too weak for modern codecs. They'll need to be re-encoded to an Amiga format. After that, they'll play comfortably even on a very low spec system. An 040 will barely help in re-encoding - that's best done on a PC, or at the very least under a high-speed WinUae system.

You will be wholly disappointed trying to watch movies on any Amiga if you are going for anything other than novelty factor, regardless of the accelerator you throw at it.  A 5 year old cellphone or 10 year old Intel PC is better suited for the task, sadly.

Might want to considering checking out MorphOS. ;)

There are a few things that make me smile when it comes to using my Amigas now vs the past:  USB, Internet, OS 4.1, laser mice, and CF cards.

Keep your subway and find a way to finance your dreams.

I'm happy owner of apollo 040 :) I've several amigas and also blizzard 060 66 mhz. 040 is much faster than 030. If you want to play games like breathles, genetic species, trapped.. 040 is minium

With AGA apollo seems much faster, ie. Workbench windows open much snappier etc.

Apollo is nice card if you don't expand you amiga much, with zorro expander blizard makes amiga much more stable.

You had better get an 060 for videos.

My 060/50 is just watchable with MPEG1 and RiVA.

a 66 or 80mhz 060 would probably do pretty well... You'll still need a high-powered PC to convert things to MPEG1...

I think he is planning on converting and watch in hamp, then a 030 card will be good enough for watching movies.
Also he do not need a high powered pc but it will take a lot longer time to convert on a old x86 CPU.

@AmigaClassicRules - keep in mind that a 040 runs really hot so no trapdoor and higher rubber feet is recommended if not towering the miggy.
A 060 and 030 runs cool tho.

Only the rare 71E41J mask 060 runs cool. Even then, people run them at higher than 50MHz...which basically means a heat sink or fan is then required.

My Amiga 1200 trap door is 100% broken. SO it have being thrown out the trash (the A1200 trapdoor) long time ago...and I have no intention of getting one when I am using 1240 apollo card.

Now it is just matter of saving money and getting one.

Thanks for the clarifications, I have never owned a 060 card but what I have understood a 060 with heatsink was running cooler then the 040 :/

Great :D I have as you know been unlucky with heat in my A1200 but it was my Lisa chip and not my accelerators fault ^^ But hey I have fixed the heat problem and all runs nice 24/7 now :)
