Not Happy with the Xsurf
« on: January 24, 2004, 05:14:15 AM »
Its been an uphill battle with this Xsurf. I ordered from Software Hut and it took almost a month to get it. Their web site says they have it in stock but they were back ordered. They did ship and I recieved it yesterday.

What they dont tell you......and I will leave THEY open as I dont know if it Xsurf or SH  but they do not tell you that you need a cdrom to make it easy. They also dont tell you that you need 8-10 megs of space on your sys: drive.

I dont have either. I managed to zip the cdrom install and null modem it over to the amiga.

I run the script and you need this installed and that installed yet its not included on the disk and theres no straight set of directions. The directions state to run the install and away you go.

And I quote......

" Start the installation script from the included cd by clicking on its icon and follow the instructions on the screen. The IDE-drivers and all necessary files will be installed on your computer automatically"

It doesnt give you any instructions to follow it just rips through a script giving our error this and error that and thats the end of it.

The board itself did plug in and the testboard program ran just fine and showed the board is good to go.

Sorry to hear about your problems.  Can you post some of the error messages you get when running the installation script?
Then we'll see if we can find out what's wrong.

How funny, I just received mine from Software Hut as well and it took just as much time for me to get it.  I had my share of speed bumps getting it going but I've been able to sort out most of it.  I suppose I'm a bit more fortunate that I had a CDROM and the necessary disk space.  What version of Workbench you running and what machine?

I'm replying to this post on my Amiga (first post on my Amiga ever) so it works.  It was not a "slam dunk" though to get going.  Given that it's fresh in my mind perhaps I can help.

Its on an Amiga 3000 with the WorkBench 38.35  with system 2.1

I bought the 3000 off ebay and didnt get any 2.1 disks so canning the harddrive isnt an option right now.

I guess I need install for dummies directions. I have 11 computers in my room here. Novell,2000 server, dos and windows and this thing has just left me frustrated.

I gather I need Miami or AmiTCP which I guess would be the TCP/IP portion?!?!   Where do I find this?  A search on aminet gets me a zillion add on files but I cannot seem to find the actualy file to unpack and install.

Thanks!

Yes. You need to get an IP stack first.  I'm using the Genesis one that comes on the OS3.9 CD.  Miami is hard to come by because you can't get codes for it anymore.  I would recommend you throw a CD drive in there soon, my life was hell with this 4000 until I did.  :)  Once you decide on the stack, you need to get it installed first, then you have to install the Xsurf software.  My install didn't go well, and I had to help it by editing the StartEthernet script to correct the paths that the installer made.  It's not pretty to setup, but it is most fun.  I'm running OS3.9 and believe me that was a project from WB 3.0.

What are the MIAMI and AmiTCP directories that came on the xsurf cd for? Is that files used by the Xsurf for those packages?!?!

I'm pretty sure they are yes.  I haven't loaded anything from there other than what was invoked by the installer.   :-)

OK so can someone verify for me then..........

Miami,AmiTCP and Genesis are all tcp/ip stack programs. One of them is needed to make an amiga get on the internet. And NONE of them are free on the internet? Something else that you need to buy along with the Xsurf to make things work that they dont tell you about?!

I went to the site that had the genesis and they talk of a "demo" version but when I went to get it all I could find were upgrades from 2.1 2.2 and 2.3 and no complete demo package?!?!

Genesis is just a GUI for AmiTCP.
AmiTCP should be on Aminet, but is a complete pain to setup (without Genesis).

Miami and MiamiDX can be found as demos on Aminet, nothing wrong with these
except that they will disconnect you after 30 min.
Should be enough to get you started.
1. Make an announcment.
2. Wait a while.
3. Check if it can actually be done.
4. Wait for someone else to do it.
5. Start working on it while giving out hillarious progress-reports.
6. Deny that you have ever announced it
7. Blame someone else

Hi

I recommend you to buy OS 3.1 ROMs and AmigaOS 3.9 for your A3000.
The benefits are really great and if you want to "network" and go into internet, you will need AmigaOS 3.1 anyway (I think), because you will not get any working browser or email-client for AmigaOS 2.1.
If you order AmigaOS 3.9 you will get Genesis-TCP/IP and the AWeb-Browser this way, they are on the CD (of cause AWeb is now GPL and free downloadable from internet).

If you bought your A3000 by eBay, why don't you try to buy a SCSI-CDRom there ? They are really cheap (32X Plextor SCSI-II has cost me 7,- EUR incl. shipping). If you look there you may also find 3.1 ROMs (rare, you need special ROMs for an A3000, couldn't use any other) and AmigaOS 3.9 (once a week).

In that case you have quite a bumpy road ahead of you. OS 2.x is missing so much that is seen by most of the modern programms as a matter of course that you have to be quite experianced to get it working with this config.
I am into Amiga for 10 years and I doubt that I could install and set up a TCP/IP connection under OS 2.x in a reasonable time (or at all).

My advise, get 3.1 ROMs and OS3.9 and see that you have at least 4 MB of Fast-RAM, but that will probably cost you at least half of what you paid for the A3000 already.
Not really interesting, but it`s there.
