From my Miggy!
« on: November 14, 2012, 08:39:17 AM »
Yes!  After months of purchases, waiting, haggling and my first kid's birth (J-Golden Jr.) I have my A4000T up and running!

Now I'm looking to get it spruced up a bit in the software department.  I have AwebSE for innerwebz right now, but would like to either get the full version or a better one more suited to my processor speed (030@25Mhz, no MMU).

I tried to download Voyager but both dowload files were incomplete and Aweb seemed all goofed up!  Any pointers or ideas?

I'm also looking to get WHDLoad up and running but have never used it.  Does anyone have a good line on a WhdLoad ofr dummies?  And CD32 games, what is the best way to emulate them on a normal Amiga?

Tankz all!  It's great to be back on the the real hardware!

WHD load is actually really easy, just download, unpack and install.
Once that is done, surf to whdownload.com find a game, download, unpack and run it.
And register WHD load, its worth it.

Slightly over-simplified, that'll get you 50% of the way there, but you forgot to mention the most complex part, setting up the kickstarts.  You need all the Amiga common kickstart roms in devs:kickstarts/ and they need to be named specifically.  Amiga Forever now ships with the ROMs all set up and named in this way so you can just copy them over, or there are alternative ways of sourcing them, but I'd be in for a TORRENT of abuse for suggesting them :)

You may also want a nice front-end for WHDLoad so you don't have to browse drawers and drawers of icons.  I like IGame, it's simple, small and runs from Workbench.

Or you could grab a ClassicWB package.  I think there is a beefed up version for a 4000 that should work well.  Plenty of nice software in there.

Whdload is really easy to use though. Just make sure you have some dumps of the various kickstarts as it will request them for certain games. As yssing says the games just require you to download an installer package from the that and it does the rest its self. Or you can download already done packages from a few sites. Once done its just click on a launcher icon for the game and off it goes.

Edit:
Like Dan said.

Awesome!  I may look into the Classic Workbench route as I've heard other good things about it and it sounds like it will help streamline the process.

I own two (yes two) copies of Amiga Forever so getting the roms over will be a breeze.

How well does WHDLoad work with CD32 Games?

As for registering, YES!  I just registered MUI and love to support the efforts of Amiga-ware!

PS- I didn't mean to do the Thumbs down on my OP!  I actually didn't think it went through as  AWeb locked up on me after submitting :(

I am not sure how it handles cd32 games. It also has to be said that Whdload isn't perfect and some games will either crash or refuse to work all together. But the main popular games should work.

If you want cd rom support in ClassicWB I think you need wither 3.x adv or 3.9. I am not sure if it's in the others but I know it's in there.

Try two years ago.  Money and time (And Iraq) were all factors in the time.  But not the desire!  Oh NO!  I've been waiting and purchasing as I could so when I had the time I could get it all done.

Other than the 030, I have a Mediator with Radeon (using the extra 400+ megs. as Fast ram) 100MB NIC, and Spider II, A NOS HD Floppy, and an Indivision Mk II.

With my son keeping mommy and me awake, I've had "plenty" of time at night to get it all configured and running.

@Crit:  I have 3.9 up and running on it so I should be fine with CD-ROM support.  Thanks for the heads up!

The few I've tried have worked well, although you don't get CDAudio.

It also has to be said that WHDLoad enables some games to work on your Amiga that wouldn't otherwise work well, as it patches/fixes CPU/kickstart and other issues..

Well worth the registration IMHO..

I wasn't saying it to be detrimental. I have Whdload and I love Whdload and I have paid for it happily. It's a great bit of software.  But I had to be honest about some games not working. Again its a great bit of software but it's not perfect. I was just been honest.

Thats cool. I just didn't want people thinking I was slagging off possibly one of the most important bits of classic miggy software ;)
