The great Amiga novel
« on: November 10, 2012, 04:01:05 PM »
Here it is lady (Cammy) and gents… a book with the Amiga. Yep, not ABOUT the Amiga, Commodore days, rise and fall, yadda yadda… This is a book WITH the Amiga as one of the main characters. To be more precise, it is a fantasy novel about a rag tag party learning about the existence of magical Ami stones (yup, those are exactly what you think they are) and then setting out on an adventure to obtain some for themselves. Because those are, naturally, the most impressive things they have ever seen in their lives :) How did these magic stones come to be? How do they work? What is their purpose? All waiting to be discovered. I plan to spread the legend of Amiga far and wide. Even to those who have never heard of it.

Unfortunately, the book is NOT in English language for the time being (I certainly plan to translate it in the future). It is in Serbian. So, I know… very few people can read this at the moment. Still, it is out there, and the story is going to continue in the sequels! This first part is named “MI o Medvedu” which roughly translates as “MI (us – Serbian word play), about the Bear”. The sequel will be named “Rise of the MI clan”.

The novel features tons of Amiga related stuff, starting with the cover design, as you can see (when the book is open, it resembles a full width wedge Amiga), Bodoni XT font used and all. There are many honorable mentions of Amiga stuff (HAM, Blizzards, etc.), and even illustrations (my brother did all of them), all masked a bit of course, to blend with the fantasy story. Topaz font used at the “about the authors” part of the book (it had to be modified a bit for Serbian language). All characters in the novel are real, and some of them will be easily recognizable as legends of the Serbian Amiga scene.

Well that’s about it. I just wanted you all to know we’re doing something to keep the Amiga legend alive. Long live the Amiga!

Well you could run the book through Google translate, the results are usually readable.

Well... it has just had its debut at the Belgrade book fair, so it is not in the usual retail channels (bookstores etc.) yet. Still, if someone wants the book (to read it if he can, or just to have it for pics/details and as an Amiga item) it would be best to PM me and buy it straight from the source. When it hits the stores, the retailers will, naturally, add their profit margins to the price, so this way you can save a bit of money :)

How much does Amazon or Apple add to the cost of a book?

Well, I got my copy from the author himself and I must say I like it. It has a nice Amiga style covers, it has 300 or so pages and so far it's really interesting to read. I've read some 50 pages or so the first day it arrived and if you're an ex-Yu resident (as the author pointed out it's not in English yet), you should buy a copy. It's worth it.

I think the idea is that you set your own price and they take a cut.

Selling on Amazon and Kindle
There are two ways to sell on Amazon which are somewhat confusing, so you should be careful with which method you decide to go with. You can set a list price for your book where you get 35% royalty when you set it at $0.99 or higher, or a sale price where you get 70% royalty on the sale price if you list it at $2.99 or higher. A list price means you always get the same percentage whenever a sale is made. However, if you set a sale price, Amazon can change the price to compete with other retailers who are selling your book and you get royalty based on whatever that sale price is.

Selling on Barnes and Noble and Nook
To sell on Barnes and Noble, you only set a list price, but you get different royalty amounts based on the price you set. Between $0.99 and $2.98, you get 40% royalties. Between $2.99 and $9.99, you get 65% royalties. And for $10.00 and up, you get 40% royalties. You also must ensure that the list price you set is not greater than the list price for other retailers.

Selling on iBookStore and iPad
For the iBookStore, you get a flat 70% royalty. There are some rather stringent requirements however, including ISBN numbers for each title, an iTunes Store account, and a validated ePub version of your eBook.

Selling on Smashwords.com
On Smashwords.com, you get 85% royalty through their site. They also have options to distribute to other retailers for you, but because your royalties are considerably lower for each retailer, you're better off signing up with those retailers yourself.

Selling on Indie Aisle
To sell on Indie Aisle, you get 90% royalties with a free account. You can also upgrade to a $9 a month premium plan for additional promotion tools.

It will be good for him once he can sell the book through those sources, but I can say, I ordered from him directly and received the book pretty quickly. He's a great guy through the whole process and I hope his book does well.

Thanx a lot pwermonger, pleasure doing business with you :) Hope you're having fun with my book during holidays.

To all non-Serbian speaking Amigans :) :
I am writing a summary in English. It will have some 15-20 pages, describing characters and important events (for each separate chapter) with picture references and explanations. So it's not just the artwork any more. You can now follow the story :)
