US Amiga 1080 monitor on a PAL Amiga 1000?
« on: October 24, 2012, 08:33:32 PM »
Guys, will the US 1080 Amiga monitor (used with a 110v->220v converter) work with a PAL, euro Amiga 1000 or will it be garbled up since it's NTSC?

Thanks

The 1084s don't care about PAL/NTSC as long as you are using RGB.
I would think it would be the same with the 1080....

The PAL/NTSC thing, as I understand it, is for composite/RF/s-video connections.

Actually I used a US 2020 and it displays PAL and NTSC, as do the other Commodore monitors too, there is a regulator behind you have to tune to decrease the height of the screen and the picture will stabilise, you will have black bars though on top and bottom....

Having had this monitor since day one (think 1986) I can tell you that it will work BUT it does not work too well.  You will have to fiddle with the vertical adjustment and size and when you do that, it messes up the NTSC adjustment.  So it does not auto switch the modes like the newer 1984(S)-P monitors do.  The boxy 1084(S)-P's work beautifully for switching from PAL to NTSC, but some of the newer 1984's (1984S D1/2) do not.

Thanks Tj, wrote an entire diatribe on this tonight, but cancelled it knowing that once again, would fall on deaf ears.

Regarding mixed tv standards (rgb or otherwise)... Good luck to anyone using a 1080 and expecting a full useable screen. Or any other C= monitor without fiddling with adjustments. Never mind the annoying flicker you'll experience.  ;)

Thanks for the replies. I was trying to go for an authentic setup for my A1000 with the 1080, but it seems like I'll be just complicating things (black border/flicker) needlessly.

Now if someone is able to retrofit an LCD panel into a 1080 housing... :D

I'll just try to get one of those old 1084S-P - the newer, D1 model one I have interferes with the A1000 drive (see my previous thread on this).

Anyone got one to sell in Europe?

on Most 108x monitors you will find some sort of happy fine-tuning on the vert so that when you bounce from NTSC/PAL, it will lock.

Now you might say it flickers and color problems crop up, esp in NON-rgb (composite video), but I found it to be fine for pal games and demos that would just refuse to run otherwise or weren't NTSC_fixed.

The best monitor I have seen for this is the Toshiba TIMM 20" RGB multiscan monitor.  Of course it's not made anymore and not may people sell them.

Well, the border issue (I had forgotten about that, but I remember now someone mentioning that before in another thread) sounds like it might be worked around with some adjusting..
Could be annoying if you swap between NTSC/PAL a lot, but if you are just sticking with PAL software, might not be an issue when you get it adjusted..
And the flicker....
er..

That IS "authentic!"  :-)

I did recently get my 1200 on an LCD, but my 500 and 1000 are on 1084s monitors and I don't mind interlace....   NTSC interlace!!     :D
Apparently it bothers some people more than others...
And for me, it's what I had back in the day, and I want authentic.

(I would have kept my 1200 on a 1084s, but desk space is getting to be a problem, and I only have the 2...)
