are there any NEW Users of Amiga machines out there?
« on: October 12, 2012, 09:01:41 PM »
I was kinda sat there thinking about this, and reflecting on my own situation. I know lots of us have "been there" way back when, championing the virtues of the newly released amiga 500 in the school yard/playground in the 16bit wars against Atari/Sega/Nintendo etc, then following it through to the A1200 etc. Then the pain of watching it all dwindle away through the following years...

lots of us are getting to a point of littler versions of ourselves are appearing (kids)... are these new people developing an interest, or is it just some crazy fixation dad/mum have with old hardwware?

ok, so maybe not just kids, but are people who have otherwise missed out on the original wave being brought into the fold?

or are we a slowly shinking core of nutters? :D

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

I'm new-ish. I first dabbled with the Amiga in 2001, but foolishly traded my A500 away for a C= 64-C (not that that was a bad computer, mind, but it was no Amiga,) and I didn't actually get back into it until the spring of 2010. Back when the Amiga was still around, I was a Mac kid...

There's actually quite a few stories of newcomers to the scene, guys saying stuff like "my uncle had one when I was a kid and I found one recently and just had to buy it, I love it!".

It's quite refreshing, honestly.  I'm mainly a NG guy lately, but I still get a real kick when I read stories on A.org about some teenage kid discovering an old A500 that he fights to get working and ends up just adoring.

Speak for yourself!
I want all those trouble making kids off of my lawn!!!!

:-)

Seriously, I have seem some from time to time...

I suppose it's a bit like when I got working on phone systems..
Yeah, I was working on digital phone systems (PBXs, etc).

But I used to love to go out on calls with Vince, the vet of the shop.
Because he got all the calls for the KSUs.  The old 1A2 phone systems..
He thought it was kind of weird that I liked those at that time...

So, when I see a younger kid on here, it reminds me of that...

My first computer was a Commodore 64 in 1991 i got from my dad, and then got a Sega master system in May 1993 and Nintendo Nes. And in 1994 i got Amiga CD32 and Super Nintendo and also a Sega Mega Drive. My first "real" Amiga was an Amiga 500 in 1998 plus monitor and 600 disc to play with :)
Then around 2000 i sold all my Console and Computers :-( But i have build up quite a collection the last 5 years, i have around 40 Computers including all the consoles and those i have 2 of. And i can remember all the 16 bit vs 8 bit and Sega vs Nintendo talk in school

I consider myself new, to Amiga that is, since around 2010.

I was born and raised Atari in the late 70s early 80s. Moved to Atari ST in early 90s. Then when the Ataris and Commodores of the day were folding, I moved onto Mac around mid 90s for business, pleasure, etc...

Then 2010 came, I stumbled across news of the X1000.  Went nuts and purchased many older Amiga systems, basically tinkering until X1000 came out, then sold all the old stuff once I purchased a SAM 440ep as I found I really only wanted NG Amiga and OS 4.x (other than the A1000 I have kept as I feel it is bad ass).

Now I consider myself a part-time Amiga user, preferring my nostalgia stuff stay Atari, NeXT, Apple, and BeBox, but the X1000 on my office desk is my day to day fun for learning Amiga on while the SAM 440ep is backup.

Now that I am about to leave the IT industry work wise, I plan on diving much more into learning Amiga 1000 and OS 4.1.x along with maybe finally buying a MorphOS license for my Mac Mini G4 1.5ppc.

So yup, fairly new Amiga addict here that was not one back in the hey day as I preferred other platforms.  But now at least I see what all the Amiga folks were excited about.  :laugh1:

I am an old timer, BUT - all of my retro Commodore stuff was stolen about two years ago. It's amazing what you can forget in two years.
I still don't have any AGA machines, but I do have a few A2000 and an A1000. I also use Amikit on an old HP computer.
I have sown the seeds of the Amiga when ever I can, with some small success.
I will use an Amiga until the silicon melts down....
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)

You did not find it turning up on Ebay?
People have tracked down their stolen stuff that way.

I suppose in the grand scheme of things I might be considered a Newbie again as I have only got back properly into the Amiga scene within the last 3 years. I had lost most of my knowledge and am struggeling to find my feet again with certain things, DOS commands?

I am completely new to the scene.

From my experience, as someone who wasn't even alive in the 80s, it seems like my peers much more readily understand the allure of vintage consoles than computers.

As someone who grew up in the 80's, and owned consoles (gradparents had a colecovision and we had a nes), the C64 was far better because I could go out with my pocket money and buy a new game. Either a budget title or a bedroom coded game, remember a guy on the local market who made his own games for £1 a go. Somthing you really couldn't do with a console lol.

I started with an A500 around 1989 and upgraded to an A1200 somewhere around 1994 when I massively started to use also a lot of apps and not only games. No need to mention what all followed until today :)))
I also started to play with my nephews then borrowed them an A500 and some years later an nice expanded A1200 but when they got their first PCs the Amiga seemd to get lesser interest. I think they only played the games on it but some of them are burned in their minds :-) (Rick Dangerous, Megatron, ...) so probably they will return some day because of nostalgia?
To speak for me the only way until the end will be Amiga - the one way or the other. Sadly not exclusively but there are developements webwise in AOS4, MorphOS, UAE and AROS which now help a lot to change the share of using the amigas throu the day :)

Im sort of newish, I was brought up on PC's but mates had 64's and one had a 500 - I managed to score my own 500 in '96 for $100aud with a box of disks, 512kb trapdoor expansion and 1084s monitor from the Department store I was working for at the time, I'd found it in the store room and convinced the sales manager to let me "take it off his hands". Unfortunately I ended up selling it a few years later as a poor 21 year old stupid enuf to have gotten married.

I still have all my disks and recently bought a 500+ from the UK so now Im back into Miggy's.

Ah wow, no offence but I had you down as being a lot older than born late 70s/80s, I thought you were some retired guy with a nice collection of classic machines.  Had no idea you were late 20s/30s though, think I've only ever heard your voice on your vids.
