AMIGA 1020 5 1/4" Floppy Drive
« on: October 10, 2012, 10:15:45 PM »
Hello, I had a question.  I recently aquired an Amiga 1020 floppy drive.  I must say that I have never in my life seen nor known a 5 1/4" floppy drive even existed for the Amiga.  This thing is in very nice condition.  What is the going rate for one of these on ebay nowadays?  Just curious for when I decide to sel it.

Part of the reason of the low turn around in price is that none of the Amigas shipped with that drive and very little, if any software, was distributed in that format. Mostly its a collectors item for the sake of completeness or in some rare scenarios, people looking to emulate an 8088 machine due to old software existing on that medium. I'd like to have one but I dont think I'd pay much for one.

As stated, it's not terribly useful except for niche things.  For instance, I have one with the speed turned down to read and copy 1541 disks.  I actually have a third-party 5 1/4 which can read 1MB floppies, and I've used that before to read IBM disks.

On ebay they generally run from $50 to $150 depending on condition and what accessories are included.

Like everybody else has said, they're not real useful.

Originally they were designed to work on the A1000 with the Transformer software that emulated an IBM PC/XT.

About the only use for them now is if someone is running a bridgeboard and jacks the 1020 into the floppy port off the bridgeboard.
