New Amiga 3000! But leave the battery alone!
« on: October 04, 2012, 05:31:50 AM »

Apparently some rich (and clueless IMHO) bidders do not want to know if their soon to be NEW A3000 has HazMat all over their nice and shiney new Amiga 3000 motherboard.

UNBELIEVABLE.

Hey guess what?  Here is what is inside the case!

Yeah some people don't understand the mess a leaking Ni-Cad can do to their "New-in-the-box" computer. It pretty much renders the motherboard useless/worthless if it's too late.
Sam460ex: PPC460ex/1GHz, 2GB RAM, 30GB SSD via on-board SATA-2, DVD-RW via USB, Radeon 5450 1GB PCIe, Catweasel Mk4 PCI, A4000 KB and Competition Pro CD32 Pad.
A4000D: 030/25MHz, 16MB RAM, Indivision Mk1, 8GB CF as HDD and IDE CD-ROM.

Amiga user since 1992.

If you want to leave it as 'new in box' it's fine. However, if you do want to use it you may likely find a big hole in the board where the battery once was....

Actually, I bought a NOS A4000 a couple years ago and the battery was in pristine condition. I suspect if they've never been charged they won't leak. Similarly, I've got a brand new spare NiCd that's been sitting in a bag for absolute ages that also hasn't leaked.

It's the deep discharge that really kills these cells. If it's in a bag the discharge is limited but in a machine it's live.

If I were the seller I wouldn't look at it either. If it's leaked it's much too late already, there's nothing to gain.

How do know what is inside the case?  Where did you get that pic, from the seller?
No way is that pic from that computer in the auction.  If the A3000 was boxed and
wrapped in plastic, it not used then there is no way there would be that much dust on
the other parts of the motherboard..sorry but no way!

Exactly!  I have a couple A4000 motherboards with the battery on and they are close to
perfect(no leaking or signs of leaking).  I had a used A4000D(absolutely MINT) years
ago and the battery and motherboard were perfect!! It can and does happen.

As always it's buyer beware !
I'm sure the new owner will understand what battery leakage is now ;)

That pic is not from that A3000.  But lets be real here, almost ALL A2000/3000/4000 computers have had the NiCad battery LEAK by 2012.  (key word Almost)  But who would take a risk for 2 grand?  Not me.
