Is there a website that lists modern components that work with AROS properly?

If I go out and buy an i7 3600k for example which motherboards are best, I think this is really important if AROS wants to grow in popularity. People building modern super fast AROS machines based on i7 tech is the only way forward IMO.

The i7 itself wont be a problem. The problems you might have, are with SATA controllers, Graphics, Sound, Network, USB etc.
Your best chance to get a 100% supported PC, is to go into the shops and ask them to boot a AROS live CD. You can then test anything.

BTW. Network and Sound support can be easily added with cheap Add on cards.

I would recommend the ARES One. It's made with AROS in mind, and though you will probably find the parts cheaper somewhere else, it is still a good and well supported buy.

Use a iX cpu or modern motherboards just for aros is a waste of money, if you have a old pc or spare parts in your house try it.

I want to use it on a brand new machine I am building, the machine will be dual boot with Windows 7 (so I can get to work on my DirectX 11 port of a classic C64 game!) and also AROS.

CPU will be the fastest i7, memory probably 16gb etc and ARES doesn't really cater for me in this situation. So you can see I need fairly modern support even if the graphics run in standard driver mode etc.

There's no real support for "modern hardware" by your examples.  Most  AROS drivers are for hardware that's several years old now.  If you're  really interested in developing for AROS You might want to consider  installing linux dual-boot and running a linux hosted AROS environment  built from one of the publicly accessible git repos.  Jason's is probably the most complete  at https://gitorious.org/aros/aros

My game is written on the the Crysis engine so it is all Win7 development, thought it would be nice to get AROS on a second partition that's all
