Ain't It Risky?
« on: September 25, 2012, 08:37:44 AM »
Just spent some time scrolling through eBay's entire current Amiga listing. Saw at least 4 software packages I want to get, so I saved them to my watch list.

Don't know if I'll actually purchase them because Amiga software, which tends to be uh, 'old', doesn't always work!

Case in point, my latest A500 came with a lot of software, almost 30 floppies. (I didn't really purchase it for the floppies, although getting so many was a nice bonus.)

Out of that 30, only about 7, maybe 8 of them worked. The rest made my floppy drive ratchet so loud, I thought the neighbors would hear! And some of them made my floppy read head so dirty, I had to put in a cleaning disk before I could access even my good floppies.

Ain't it risky, buy floppies for the Amiga? I actually really want those games, but I'm concerned they'll all be DOA - Dead On (my) Amiga!

Of course it's risky. Just download the games.

Buy the game if you get box, manuals etc. The disks will probably be dead. The internet for the rest.

Clean the floppydrive, clean the disc, make a sequential track reading and store it.
I think copy protections are the real hickup here as youmay only get one shoot at reading the disc.

Yes, too risky.  I've stopped using non-virtual floppy disks in non-virtual Amigas, I can't really afford to replace this stuff any more, my non-virtual Amigas have been carefully packed and stored.
