Long filename on DVDs
« on: January 21, 2004, 11:09:57 PM »
Hi:

I got a SCSI DVD for testing purposes on my amiga and it seems to work fine, I can even play DVDs (slowly) with AMP2 but I cannot read the correct filenames of some dvd media, I only see the 8 first chars of the filenames with a 3 char extension.. when I read the same disc on PC it shows the complete names... I'm using OS3.9's cacheCDFS...

Is anyone experienced on this? How could read the filenames correctly on amiga??

Any help will be appreciated!!!

Cheers

D.

use another filesystem ?
for instance I use FAT95 for any pc formated devices so that I see more than just 8+3.

There are several types of DVD filesystems..

The most common is UDF and doesn't have to worry about file name length and is packet read and write driven, very unlike ISO-9660. But there are DVDs that have ISO and UDF file names on it..

Let's not forget the infamous ROCK-RIDGE extensions :-)

@Dragster

I guess that when you talk about DVD's you mean the recorded that you can buy in video stores.

A video DVD use both ISO and UDF filesystem. The ISO filesystem only supports 8.3 names and where adapted to reduce the development cost of the first generation DVDs.

UDF filesystem is the standard filesystem for all kinds of DVD media and also for CD-RWs.

There are one driver on Amiga that is supposed to read UDF formatted discs. It's named Allegro filesystem from Elbox.

You can also wait for OS4.0 that claims atleast to be able to read UDF formatted DVD-ROMs. If it support writing. (drag and drop) I don't know, but it looks like it might.

Hi Dragster,

AFAIK, AllegroCDFS can do the job :-)
