Amiga 2000 Connection problem
« on: September 22, 2012, 03:01:35 PM »
Hi!

I'm havng difficulties figuring out how to connect my Amiga 2000 with my Commodore 1081 monitor. I haven't used this set up since the early-mid 90s so I've forgotten the drill.

I can't find any connectors for this application. I have still got the mains cord for both monitor and computer but I need to know what sort of cable to use for connecting these two units.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers!

I'm not familiar with this monitor, it has an 8-pin round DIN and a scart connector -- European model; normal for a 1080/1084 monitor, the cord has a 23-pin connector on the Amiga side and a 9-pin on the monitor. You could use the a2000 Black/White composite (yellow RCA) but it is fuzzy and only good for diagnosis.

Thanks for your reply!

I don't have much know-how regarding connectors, but is it possible to find a cheap composite 23-pin/9-pin connector cable and are they widely available?

Fuzzy resolution is fine as long as it's cheap since I'm primarily just wan't to check if my Amiga 2000 is functional.

In fact, any cheap cable that enables me to connect the monitor and Amiga 2000 to set a diagnosis will work. :)

In that case, a standard RCA cable should suffice. You should be able to do mono video out from the 2000 to the single connector on the 1081. If there are three connectors on the monitor, remember that two of them are video (old-style luma/chroma) and one is audio. I *think* you can connect to either video.

If you want good video quality, you'll need a 23-pin to DIN video cable. This might be the right kind. Or if there's a 9-pin DSUB connector, one of these. Hard to tell what your monitor has, since there are a gazillion different versions of each model number monitor!

Hi

Thanks for your posting.

Here's a photo, taken with my mobile phone, illustrating the back-side connectionson the C1081 monitor and Amiga 2000. Although the quality is bad I hope it's visible enough.

Cheers!

I'm going to the flicks soon, but I will return to see any postings in this thread later this evening or tomorrow, in case you wonder why I don't reply :)

Yeah the RCA on the far left looks like a composite. A proper SCART cable will set you back about 15 £

Hi,

Thanks!

I looked at Amigakit and found these cables (among others):

SCART TO AMIGA (RGB) CABLE WITH AUDIO, €16.56 and

SCART TV TO AMIGA (AV) CABLE WITH AUDIO, €4.86.

First and foremost I need to verify that this set up actually works and I'll go for the cheapest option. Will the 2nd cable (euro 4,86) work for the intended purpose?

Ah, SCART! If only it were more common in the USA. Would make finding an Amiga display much easier.

You'll want the RGB (more expensive, sorry) variant for maximum quality. The AV version will work, but you'll get a fuzzy, black and white picture.

In fact, if you're using composite video out from the Amiga, then the SCART cable gives you no advantage in this case. Just run a single RCA cable from the mono video port on the 2000 to the video connector on the monitor - the leftmost one. Quality will be identical to the AV SCART cable.

Hi!

Ok, just coupling the units with one single RCA, then?

I'm probably talking through my hat ...but I've actually got something that looks like a "single" RCA cable in front of me. It's red in one end and black in the other end. Could this do the trick?

Hi!

I found these web-store offers on Scart-RCA connectors:

https://datordax.se/product/28259

http://www.kjell.com/sortiment/ljud-bild/kablar-adaptrar/scart/scart-rca/kabel-scart-3xrca-med-switch-p39239

http://www.biltema.se/sv/Kontor---Teknik/TV-ljud-och-bild/Kablar/Scart--3-RCA-84633/

Could I use any of these three cables to connect my A2000 with the C1081 monitor?

Although the text is in Swedish, the images can be enlarged to have a better view.

Thanks in advance.

@AmigaWorkbench

Just use a single RCA cable if you just want to test how how you'r machine functions, and if you want good quality picture buy this one: http://www.ggsdata.se/Datorer/scartami.php
