Recomendations for a joystick for WinUAE
« on: September 16, 2012, 05:50:26 AM »
I'd love to be able to play all my old games with a joystick, but having some trouble finding one that is close to the old Star Cursor. in look and feel, the flight sim type are crap for games that require pounding on the fire button.

Is there an interface that you can (still) get for the PC, to plug in an original Amiga joystick?

would love a Catweasel MK4 but they are no longer made.

Ah, yes, Jens do you hear this?

Actually, there are a lot of people who would like one of those.

Me included.

also search on ebay for "retrolink"

also look on dealextreme.

I purchased the original Qanba from DX for $50. the Qanba 2 is $164, otherwise i'd recommend it for fighting games, but not at that price.

So this will work with WinUAE? if so it would be ideal.

There are DB9-USB adapters out there but I have never used one, a few guys make them though.

I also found these nicer sticks, they cost a bit more but look like they have higher quality parts:

Thanks, I think I'll get an adapter and put the Star-Cursor back in action. Those boxes are huge and I really like the thumb Fire.

I have a replica NES controller that works with WinUAE, I don't see why this would not work... don't have one though...

There was a similar thread on AW, so I opted for that adapter (a DIY project, sold as a kit ) : it even allows you to plug a second 9pin joystick.
Go on and use your favorite AMiGA joystick.

I have two of them and they are pretty decent. That being said: The USB-Interface of the Competition introduces some small lag (not noticable per se, but if you add the lag of the emulator it can give you a little strange feeling). Catweasel is definitely faster, but doesn't work with any 64 Bit OS - nobody ported the drivers.

Furthermore Competition Pro 5000 from the 80s are just a little bit better in terms of stability and reliability.

I must admit, I just used an adapter for a playstation controller. Seemed simpler and certainly cheaper :)

if you have the original 4-players parallele adapter, you could plug it to your PC (if it still has a parallele port), plug your Amiga joystick and use ppjoy driver that you can get at http://ppjoy.bossstation.dnsalias.org/

I bought a cheap USB gamepad, opened it up and soldered a DB9 socket to it.  Now I can use any old joystick (like my WICO bat) with my PC and emulators.

That thing on Ebay seems to do the same thing.

The Competition Pro USB is as "Old School" and durable as they come; Amigakit sells them for 23 USD
