First X1000 in Louisiana?

Well, I've finally had a chance to unbox it, set it up and switch it on and thankfully my new AmigaOne X1000 survived the trip across the pond intact:


Just like a new PC, it boots you into a Welcome screen where you can adjust your location, keyboard type, screen resolution, sound output and add additional optional software:


I was using a 1920x1080 monitor and the screen modes didn't include the resolution.  Checking the auto detect box and rebooting allowed OS4.1 to detect the maximum resultion of the monitor and to set the screen mode for me.


So, what do you do once you've bought a new Amiga?  You play a game (off the Memory stick visible in the top USB ports)...


Finally I quickly tested my network connection.  A couple of clicks on the setup wizard and I was surfing the net using Timberwolf:


Right, now to update some of the software and have a good play with it.  Thanks to everyone involved.

Congratulations, I like that the X1000 has a Fractal Design Define case made from the Swedish company Fractal Design I got that case for one of my x86 based PC's

Glad to see you got it and are having fun with it, Darrin!  I enjoy my SAM 440ep quite a bit.

Shame they never offered the X1000 mobo to guys that wanted to build their own systems, I likely would have taken the plunge if they had.

Glad you are finally home and got a chance to unpack and fire up your X1000.

I am jealous that you got "RunInUAE" setup and were playing old Classic Amiga games so quickly.

I am sitting here trying to learn the "C" programming language on my X1000 and playing Defender of the Crown looks like a lot more fun.

It is great that we are now seeing many more new X1000 owners posting about their experiences and enjoyment of their X1000's.  Although not much has been happening in the group lately, I invite all of you new X1000 owners to join the X1000 Social Group here at A.org, so we can revive it and get some lively discussions going there, or use it for other X1000 related purposes.

@ Everyone:  Cheers.  This is a great looking case and everything has been painless so far.

@ Dave:  I guess they've tweaked the RunInUae setup.  All I had to do was double-click the Icon on the dock and then double click an ADF file.  The Internet setup was just as painless, and I just selected "auto" for any settings questions and I was done.

My next step is to locate some OS4.x games and install them.

I have a PCIe to PCI adapter coming and when that arrives I'll install my Catweasel.

How does runinUAE work with multiple disk games?
 
Could you rig up WHDload to run ?

Give the click-and-go credit to Hyperion's OS 4.1 team, especially with Update 4 & 5 for RunInUAE. I know how powerfully your X1000 is (drool) but I get to do the OS 4.1 experience on Classic Amiga (A4000T) and it is nice.

Nice looking unit, I imagine you spend close to $2000 for that unit, was just wondering was it really worth it, I mean what else can it do? You can browse the web, and run UAE to play classic Amiga games.

Is there any software being made for it? and if there is what kind, the next question I would have to ask is, will this be around in the future or is it just another orphan machine.

I know I am being a party pooper, but it seems a Windows machine, and I mean a very high end one, which would probably make that Amiga One look like it was standing still would cost about as much, and probably a little bit less.

Now seeing that a very high end windows gaming machine would cost about as much, the windows machine also gives me the possibility of playing legacy Amiga games with winuae, but also can play the new games out for windows. Plus if I dual boot I can run the free awesome Ubuntu and get thousands of free programs.

Can you or anyone else give me justification for wanting one of these machines?

Took a chance with an Amiga, now it is a very orphaned machine, where the only programs made for it are from programmers just goofing around with it just to see what they can do with this machine.

I would like to get an Amiga One but the cost is very high, and from what I see you are getting an OS and an UAE emulator at about 4 times the cost of a good windows gaming machine.

Please keep us informed on what you are doing with the machine, besides starting up an OS and playing legacy games. Your input to the rest of the community will be very important for Amiga users at Amiga.org in our future buying decisions.

Hate to say this Darrin, but you are now are quinea pig for this new computer. We would like to hear more good stuff about it in the future. I like the looks and the style, I also like internet use. How about printing, office work, video, TV, streaming video, watching DVD movies, and other stuff that a windows machine can do.

Your input to us, may start a new Amiga revolution. Hope everything goes well, and yes I am interested in buying if I get the right answers.

All I've plugged into the USB port so far is the memory stick, so I can't answer that yet.  I'll test a few devices that I've used with my A4000 and Deneb when I get a chance.

With Defender of the Crown, I just placed the 2 ADF images in the same folder on the memory stick and double clicked on the first ADF image.  RunInUAE simes to do some sort of "smart mount" of the additional ADF files so there was no disk swapping required.  Again, I'll test a few more games during the week.

As for WHDLoad, I guess that would need to be set up within a HDF file or directory and run from within UAE to have access to the (emuulated) classic custom chipset.  RunInUAE does have a OS3.1 setup, but I haven't tried to do anything with it.  I'll try and get ClassicWB working if I can because I have some HDF files set up for my Minimigs that use WHDLoad.

They've done a good job.  I was wondering what sort of issues I might encounter and there weren't any.

What didn't you think would be my sort of thing?  You mean anything other than "classic"?  

I've had an Efika for years and used WinUAE from the earliest days.  I admit to being a "Classic" fan and enjoying my FPGA solutions, but I've been looking forward to getting an OS4.x since the start.  I really wanted one of the original XE machines, but I took the advice at the time to wait and although it has been a hell of a long wait, the X1000 has been worth it.

I still have some updating to do to Timberwolf and RunINUAE.  I'll download them tomorrow.

Well, there is a huge list of classic applications that can be installed natively, so that's one thing I need to address.

To be honest, from what I've seen of this thing, I should be able to use it as my main desktop PC excluding those PC games that I can't live without.  As such, I don't see it becoming an orphan, but it is going to sit alongside my i7 laptop.

I haven't seen a Windows machine yet that can run OS4.x.  

If I just wanted to run old classic applications in UAE then you would be right.  I have AmigaForever installed on my i7.  However, I'm interested in where we can go next and OS4.x gives me that.  The fact that there are people using OS4.x and MorphOS shows that there are those who want to step beyond OS3.9.

Also, it still cost me less than I paid for my original A2000 setup back in 1987, and that's without factoring in for inflation.

I can't justify you buying a Chevrolet, a 4 bedroom house, getting married, eating a steak or taking a holiday in Outer Mongolia.  Everything is a personal choice.  If you want to run OS4.x then the X1000 is great choice.  Do you need to run OS4.x?  Not really, you can still run classic games on WinUAE or even buy a Minimig.  I want to run OS4.x so I bought an X1000.  I can't decide if the choice is right for you, only you can.

It is a lot of money, especially now with the economic situation.  To be honest, my wife wasn't impressed with the timing of the delivery because we're also building a new house, we had a $7000 water leak in our existing house last month (thank god the insurance coughed up), and we've had several other large bills come in.  However, I promised AmigaKit I'd buy one and I don't break my word.

I'll certainly try and keep everyone updated (if they're interested).  Shame I'm going to have so little time to use it.  I've got 6 days left and then I'm off on another 4 week business trip.
