Workbench 2.1 questions

Ok, I got my 2.04 rom upgrade and have set up my SCSI hdd just fine.

I just want to know a couple of things with this workbench.

Where do I copy the files from the fonts disk to on the hdd? (The install kept failing and I had to manually copy the workbench disk to the hard drive).

And where do I store files such as lha (compression program) so it will always be "seen" no matter where I am in the shell? Kinda like a dos "path=" command, but permanent. EDIT: Actually, will it be the "c" directory?

FONTS go in DH0:FONTS/ and LHA etc. go in DH0:C/

You can add directories to the path by editing your s:user-startup file.

For example I'm obsessed with keeping my C directory as clean as possible, so I have all my external binaries in sys:bin. Thus I have the following in my user-startup:

path sys:bin ADD

Remember the add in the end, else it'll change your path to point only to sys:bin, and we don't want that. :-)

I'm wondering, is there an AmigaOS tutorial on the net? I've personally learned by reading the manuals whenever I bought an OS update back in the day, but nowadays many people getting into Amigas will probably never see an AmigaOS manual live. :-/

Thanks guys. Yea I found out just by trying it not long after posting that if I put stuff into the c then it's fine and worked how I wanted.

I'll have to work on that lha thing though as when I brought a file back I compressed on the PC, the amiga lha was having a heart attack about crc errors and stuff.

Thanks for that fonts tip. I'll just make a root fonts and copy the fonts disk to it.

And a tutorial, yea, that would be nice. So far since I got my amiga a few weeks ago, I'd never had used any amiga os previously, so I've just been trying to play it by ear so far. Luckily I've been able to suss out a few things due to my dos knowledge. It's all pretty logical though so that makes it easier.

Oh, one more question, is there a way to make it always "show all files" instead of having to choose it in the menu all the time? Thanks.

After you have selected "Show >> all files" in the menu, select "Snapshot >> Window" in the same menu...

I learned most by trial and error and lots of curiosity. Thank god I started out with WB 2.04, "Show all files" was what got me interested in the inner workings of such usable drawers as s, c and libs.

I learnt through trial and error (oh and lots of copies of AF / AS).

Never forget the sense of achievement at managing to change the font (the manual was #### OK!!), that's what made me decide to stop gaming as much and start to concentrate on the serious side.

Ah, so that should be like when you are in the tools->folder options->view->folder views->apply to all folders when you are in explorer in windows? IE: It applies that view to all open and future opened windows? And does it make it so everytime you boot it's in effect? Thanks.

No, of cause it only affects the currently active window, but why do you want to corrupt the great Icon-system of the Amiga Workbench ?
I think it makes sence that only the files are visible that can be "executed" by doubleclicking with the mouse. If I need to access all the invisible files of a directory, I don't use the Workbench. There are much better ways like DirOpus (like the Windoof-Explorer, only much better ;-)). The version 4.12 is like a Norton-commander (but also better) and for free. And there is a fantastic shell implemented in AmigaOS that could be used, not such an ugly DOSShell as in Windoof.
