Bob's Ur Uncle!
« on: September 03, 2012, 09:14:58 AM »
I was going to call this post "Where's the Definitive Edition?" but 'Bob's Ur Uncle' sounded more fun.

But anyway, where IS the definitive edition of the book which contains all the fantastic wealth of knowledge found on mainly this (and also other) Amiga forums?

Everyone here knows how very difficult it can be to restore and maintain these old machines. Initial hardware setup alone is enough, sometimes, to defeat the most dedicated and stubborn Amiga hobbyist, I should know!

But I know I can always come here, troll the forums, and find the answers I need.

That's when it occurred to me that this knowledge ought to be condensed into a book, PDF, or CD for future generations, and plain old current reference.

Where is that book? Is it something we could all do together, or would we tear each other's heads off trying to agree on stuff?

I say the first step should be categorizing the chapters into areas of Amiga Type, Hardware, Installation, Software, Tweaks & Add-ons, Games, and Maintenance.

I would buy that book!

Ha-ha! You're right! But, on the other hand, I guess the answer to my original question, then, is a 'no'! ;)

No.
Google: Amiga hardware, Amiga history and you will find people have already put up a lot of guides. The only thing I haven't found easily is installing and upgrading the operating system.
Someone know of some OS help online?

A wiki would be the ideal way nowadays. How hard is that to set up?

Well...that's not really a good reason to NOT do a thing, just because somebody else has already done it. If it were, this forum wouldn't even exist. Adam and Eve had already sinned, had sex, and rightfully blamed it all on Apple, long before anybody else, but it didn't stop the rest of us from doing it better when we came along! I think there's definitely a place for reference resource of this nature, based on the info found in this forum.

That's an even better idea! A wiki that can be constantly updated. It could be an entire new sub-site, based on this one, as an encyclopedic reference. Basically, stuff would get 'proven' in the forum, and once its known to work, it could go into the wiki.

That was my thinking, plus existing guides could be imported pretty easily.

I had a quick peek. I see it is also hosted 'in partnership' with this forum. However, I still think there's room for another one - a totally different approach - more audiovisual, for one thing.

P.S. That one seems awfully slow responding.
